Even in a multifamily dwelling such as an apartment or condo, Wi-Fi is safe; everyone is on their own network secured with a password. You should have firewall software installed on your computer and your router acts as a physical firewall between your computer and the outside world. Even if you work on a laptop, you still use your own network, just be sure you have it secured. I agree, DSL is slow, I can't imagine them not wanting you to use household Wi-Fi, they usually want the fastest connection possible. I think they must be referring to public hot spots.
