Interesting find in the TSG just now ... - anon

Posted: Apr 01, 2014

Isn't it interesting that the Transcription Style Guide gives this example:

"gram negative not gram-"

...withOUT noting that the "Gram" in Gram negative is capitalized?  The name "Gram" in this laboratory test comes from the scientist's name who developed the test, thus in hospitals, labs, etc it is duly noted as "Gram stain", NOT "gram stain".  Why wouldn't MModal recognize it as such in the TSG?

2 different entities. gram-neg and gram-pos or Gram stain. - MTPeep

not the same things at all. see, we learn something new every day. LOL :)

Huh? I'm not sure I know what you mean ... - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Gram-negative and Gram-positive are each results for the Gram stain lab test, thus they each receive capitalization. Maybe I'm not following what you mean there.

nope. they are not the same as Gram stain. - MTPeep

[ In Reply To ..]
gram-negative rods, gram-positive is correct. Gram stain is the only entity that gets a capital G. Not related at all to the test, Gram stain. So, in this case, TSG is correct.
LOL... just googled it and went on Wiki, and its Gram-negative. LOL - MTPeep

I'll be danged. Well, I was brainwashed by the BOS, and it has lower case gram on results, like negative and positive. TSG is based off BOS, so there ya go! LOL... Clear as mud
Ah! OK that explains it, kind of ... LOL - anon

Thanks for the laugh!

It does explain where the mistake originated but IMO it needs to be corrected. If ANYONE out there is dinged on an audit for the capitalized vs uncapitalized versions of Gram stain, Gram-positive, Gram-negative, based on TSG or BOS misinformation, you need to challenge it because the proper notation for this test and its results is "Gram", NOT "gram". A scientist's name in connection with their namesake test is ALWAYS capitalized, not lower case.
Gram stain; gram-positive - mt

I would like to see what a QC person says on this. Has anyone heard from a QC?
they would go with no caps on gram-neg, etc. based on - MTPeep
[ In Reply To ..]
TSG plus the BOS layered under it. So, it would be no caps unless Gram stain.
Ok, so I thought one of the points to the orig - post was the hyphen
[ In Reply To ..]
whether it is gram negative or gram-negative, according to the TSG.
No, not the hyphen - the capitalization of Gram vs gram - NM

Ok, well here is why I thought that - ~Bounce~

HA! Good point, that makes sense! - NM

They're referring to the word "negative" versus using a hyphen - Anon
[ In Reply To ..]
It's listed under Positive/Negative references and they're saying to type "gram negative" as opposed to "gram-" when the word "negative" is dictated.

On 4/2 a job posting was listed for part-time psychiatry work out of a "small transcription company out of Ohio" that could lead to full time work. Very Interesting.....
Apr 16, 2012

I think it is very interesting how a company will make you jump through hoops to "prove" you are an independent contractor but still want you to use an employee based punch in/out system. You don't get it both ways, if I am an independent contractor, then I don't have to use your employee based punch system, especially when you want to charge for it but to keep track of my own hours is free. ...

It Will Be Interesting To See What Happens When
Jan 28, 2014

Been reading the business perspective of what will happen when (not if - when) minimum wage is increased, and 99% of companies who employ low income workers say that will be the day they lay off most of their employees, or have to close their doors altogether.  Not that I expect MModal to ever "close their doors", but that does leave open the other alternative for a huge layoff as the need to "supplement" employees who aren't earning minimum wage, or who don't meet their ridiculou ...

Something That I Found Very Interesting
Nov 21, 2009

Just for the heck of it, I went to the resume section of this board, and noticed there were quite a few MTs with "entry-level or less than 5 year's experience" wanting to be compensated 10-15 cpl  -- I really seriously doubt that is going to happen, especially for a "newer" MT.  I would suggest that if you are really serious about finding a job in MT, then revise your expected compensation rate to something a bit more realistic. ...

Isn't It Interesting That Newbies Are Getting
Jul 01, 2010

us oldies are getting below 98%, in some cases waaayy below, after years or decades of exemplary work, with raises, etc. How much more obvious can it get that they're downsizing the highest paid (and most experienced) MT/ME, to hire the newbies and get the tax breaks. Makes me SICK, so I resigned a couple weeks ago and feel absolutely in shock that I did it, finally, and trust in God for a better job. ...

Something Interesting I Noticed.....
Jun 15, 2011

I work in-house at a clinic.  When I'm reading over reports from the transcription service, I noticed there are no periods after "Mr.," "Dr.," and so forth.  The transcriptionists type them as Dr, Mr, Mrs, etc.  Is this yet another way to cheat the MTs out of keystrokes?  If so, that's pretty pathetic. ...
