Working IC status - miffedmt

Posted: Sep 24, 2013

I'm really new at working for an MTSO, having had our entire dept outsourced to Nuance in 12/2011.  Worked for Nuance for a year and made NO MONEY (they sent all the good stuff to India) and now I have the opportunity to work for a company that pays by the minute (1.06/1.26).  Just wondering if this is a livable wage? Will be working for a hospital in Louisiana.  Any thoughts?

audio minute - depends

In my experience, an audio minute takes about 3 minutes to type. So pretend you have 30 minutes of audio and you spend 90 minutes typing it. Thirty minutes of audio at $1.06 per audio minute = $31.80. You'll make a little over $10.00 an hour. Remember you have to pay 33% of that in taxes, so really you'll only make about $7.00 an hour.

Your math is off. $31.80 for 90 minutes doesn't equal $10 an hour. I think you did it as 30 minutes in an hour, not 60. I may be reading it wrong as well, but I think typing she is getting 1.26 and ASR is 1.06.

I work by the audio minute. At first I was hesitant, but because of the dictators I deal with, I actually make more money than I did getting paid by the line. It takes me about 4 hours to do 100 audio minutes of ASR.

So 1.06 x 100 = $106. $106 for 4 hours equals $26.50/hour.

Typing takes me way longer and I definitely don't make as much that way.

If you have fast talkers working by the audio minute can cost you. If you have dictators who stumble around, leave lots of pauses, and talk slowly, getting paid by the audio minute can be beneficial. I actually prefer the long dictations now because I don't care if that 10 minutes of audio is by a horrible dictator that only results in 20 lines.

JustMe is right - I miscalculated

You should go by what JustMe said. I don't know how I got so far off.

Everyone calculates different. - factor everything

I personally would just calculate how much for an hour of dictation and divide that by your own personal ratio, 2:1, 3:1 or 4:1. Everyone is different. You also have to factor in no benefits and do you have to learn new software? That could slow you down at first. Good luck.

Thank you for all your responses. I'll give this a shot for a bit to see how it goes. Would rather get paid hourly, but that's going down the tubes along with the industry unfortunately.

IC Status?
Mar 26, 2014

What "really" happened to IC status?  How did we turn into employees without benfits?  I recall when IC was REALLY IC.  I took a break and things had changed pretty drastically!  We now are required to basically do "shift work," which I understand to a point, but it sure isn't the way it was!!  I recall getting paid more because we did not get benefits, more for fast speakers and ESL--what happened to that?  I personally just dropped out for awhile, and a new ...

Questions About IC Status
Jan 21, 2010

I've worked for an MTSO for about nine years.  Work is scarce, and I need to find another part-time job or maybe just leave and work full time.  I don't know anything about IC.  I see things like you are required to do your own taxes and can work the flexibility of what you want as long as you get the TAT.  I know insurance is not covered in these positions.  But how do you handle time off for vacations or personal days?  Do you go on vacation and then com ...

IC Status Question
Sep 27, 2010

I have 2 accounts, who only dictate once a month. I work for someone who has lost a lot of their work, and so I can't count on them as before. I have 1 other account where I could work until my fingers fall off, but I am concerned about IC status. If I keep these small accounts and maximize working for the the larger one, would I still be considered an IC? How many clients do you need in order to maintain IC status? Does the IRS care if they don't produce enough income to give me a 109 ...
