Speech recognition vs. straight typing? - cathy

Posted: Oct 07, 2012

Ok everyone, need some advice please.  At my old company I was straight typing and doing probably 1800 lines daily.  I go do a new company and speech rec is all they have with probably 1% straight typing.  I've been losing on the average of $600 per pay period as a result of speech rec.  How the heck can I get back the money I was making doing straight typing?

speech wreck - check out

Welcome to the New World of MT. Check out what others say about speech wreck on the other forums. The only way to get back the money is to get a different job in a different profession. I did and it worked great. If you are young enough to be getting a different career do it now. It will only get worse and worse with this MT stuff and making nothing with speech wreck. It is not easy making any money with SR, money is half what you make with straight and more work to do and depending on what platform you use, you will not be making any money with SR.

All I can suggest is to work - twice as many hours

or more. Otherwise see post above.

I'm finding that out unfortunately and of course they don't give a crap you can't pay your bills. I've been doing this 30 years and am so fed up. I get these "helpful hints" from the supervisor but of course they aren't so helpful. I'm trying my hardest to get out of this but when working on the resume all it shows is transcription.

Resume - Job Coaching

[ In Reply To ..]
Right, all your resume says is transcription, but a list of jobs is not the sole purpose of a resume and cover letter.

That kind of resume only works if you want another MT job. If you want a different job, you will need to tailor it for each job you apply for. Identify the skills required for the job and demonstrate how you meet them.

Employers do not know what MT is. To them, it appears to be typing. You have to show them.

Employes are not attracted by earnest assertions that you "know you can do it" and they cannot risk "giving you a chance." You have to show them that you have the skills to do it and demonstrate that they are not risking much in hiring you. Showing them that you already perform those duties is the way to do that.

Come up with a better reason than not making enough money or not liking VR. As legitimate as those are for you, an employer will find them negative. Come up with positive reasons to change jobs.

Many of the job-related posts here show that the applicant does not really understand what the new job does or requires. A medical records clerk 30 years ago might have been clerical, but they aren't today. If you communicate that you think being able to answer a multiline phone is the crucial skill, you will not be considered because they are looking for evidence that you understand health record structure, content, filing systems, law, HIPAA, release of information, and everything else they do.

If you want a job in a medical office, you will need to communicate that you understand and can perform those duties. Front office, billing and insurance, scheduling, patient relations, bookkeeping, and medical records, both paper and EHR.

There are many things you do now that can help you, but you will need to identify them. You might need to demonstrate some career refresher activities, too. A medical record tech course will take 2+ years full time at a college, but you can learn coding much faster (3 to 4 months for an outpatient-only AAPC-type course to a year for a full course). There are textbooks on medical front office assisting which you could study, and the AAPC now offers a certification in medical office management. They have a prep course for that exam. I heard that Andrews was coming out with a short course for that, as well as one for billing.

You have to market yourself.

all that resume jazzing probably isn't going to do much good if there are several perky 20 somes applying for the same jobs, many with better, fresher skill sets, and some of those likely to get hired more by who they know rather than what they know, which is often the case in medical offices.

On the bright side, you can probably expect your VR pay to increase somewhat after you have worked with it for a while, although you will likely never see an increase to the $300 per pay period you have lost. I have just learned to live with less and am waiting for retirement and what comes after that.
When I worked in clinic, we by-passed those 20yo. We went for the more - experienced, probably married, mature worker. nm

Speech recognition question - TJ

[ In Reply To ..]
I am not sure how to explain my problem. But on the new platform on DocQScribe, I cannot move my cursor up or down on a sentence myself. Can anyone tell me if I need to adjust something? Thanks!

Also, another question, are we able to make our cursor bolder like we used to be able too? I cannot find out how to do that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

did you really mean $600 per day? - nm

making up pay - TJ

I understand exactly how you feel. SR cuts into your pay big time. The only answer I can come up with is getting really proficient with the speech recog machine, go faster, possibly work more hours if you are allowed to. Our once very nice paying job has now become very low paying, and it is terribly frightening esp given the times we live in, and also if you support yourself! Don't despair. Try learning short-cut keys, and speeding up as fast as you can on the reports that you can follow along easily. Do the 5-word check as you go along which means keeping focused on 3-5 words at a time as you do speech rec (SR). Hope that helps.

This is fast becoming a 2nd income job. Not a family supporting - career. nm

That is exactly on the money!!! Getting into the business was expensive, time-consuming, a lot of effort and the pay does not meet those prerequisites.

Help! My Corporation Just Went To Speech Recognition!
Jul 31, 2010

Hello: I don't know if I am using the right terminology, but my corporation has decided to use some kinda digital voice capture, so the software spits out unedited reports.  meaning, as a hospital trained transcriptionist, I've gone from transcription to pure editing.  And I am quaking in my boots.  I would like to supplement my current job with at home transcription.  Is this even still to be found?  All perspectives welcome.  Thank you. ...

Speech Recognition Editing Course
Aug 01, 2010

I graduated in May from the MT program at a local two-year college and, naturally, it's nearly impossible to find a medical transcription job as a newbie. Since speech recognition seems to be the future, I was wondering if taking a speech recognition editing course would be a good investment of my time and money. AHDI, I know, is offering a speech recognition editing course. I've done a lot of copy editing in my previous clerical jobs. I've always been good at copy edit ...

Hate Speech Recognition.
Jul 22, 2013

When I get nothing but VR reports and have to change every second word, it is so hard getting even minimum wage and it is just so much more exhausting than regular typing where you get into a rhythm and I get so many bad dictators doing VR.  If I keep getting nothing but VR, don't know if I will last here.  Anyone else feel like this?  Do these dictators think that all their slurred words, yawns, etc., magically morph into a perfect document.  Ve ...

Speech Recognition Insertions
Oct 05, 2014

On a report, under "social history", the speaker says the patient lives alone with some pets. Speaker dooesn't actually state anything further regarding pets, but the document says "7 cats" right after where it says patient lives with pets. Where did speech recognition get the fanciful nondictated " 7 cats" from? Does it mean that speech recognition probably heard a previous report in which another patient had 7 cats? Interestingly, this was a psychiatric report. Given that the patie ...

Is DocQvoice Only A Speech Recognition System?
Jan 13, 2012

Is DocQvoice only a speech recognition system?  I have a very good lead on a job working directly for a small hospital, but was just told by the woman who already works for them that they are going to DocQvoice.  Right now it is all straight transcription on a Lanier system with a VXP player.  She doesn't seem to think it would be speech recognition because she doesn't think the doctors would go for it.  Also, I'm not sure I'm interested in the job if it's not straig ...

Speech Recognition Line Counting
Oct 24, 2013

My job is transitioning to from straight transcription to speech recognition.  This is what is being offered: 0.045 per line A line is defined as 2 edited lines = 1 regular MT typing line of 65 characters So in summary, 1.  My cents per line is going to be cut in half going to SR editing. 2.  The edited lines is also being cut in half because it takes 2 edited lines to equal 1 transcribed line. Does this sound right?  Are all companies counting lines this way?  If ...

Tricks To Faster Speech Recognition Editing?

Nuance: Speech Recognition Versus Transcription Line Counts
May 13, 2012

As I was working today I thought about speech versus transcription, and it occurred to me that I was transcribing a good deal in each speech report I "edited." Why is transcription done for a full report paid any differently than transcription done in a speech report? In other words, why don't I get paid my transcription line count for the characters I am transcribing in a speech report, particularly since a great deal of these speech reports require almost re-transcribing completely due to ...
