Calling all Radiology girls........need input - Perplexed in Ohio

Posted: Dec 13, 2013

I finally have the opportunity to get out of this work-at-home situation and go to a hourly paying job doing radiology transcription.  The only radiology I have done is the usual radiology dictated on reports in the acute care setting.

In your honest opinions, do you think that someone who has been doing acute care for 15 years could transition over to radiology?

Thanks

absolutely - NK

In my 49-year experience, medical transcription is medical transcription. Any word you don't know can be researched in the same way that it is in acute care.

I was a radiology tech for 20 years before i was injured at work and went on to transcription. My first job was for a wonderful APM doc and then I went on to Radiology. I thought both of these were very easy, but I had worked in that field for 20 years so the terminology was very familiar to me. I had no problem with it, but I did have problems with anything NOT dealing with Radiology, Physical Therapy, or pain management. I think it just slows every one down when they are not used to doing a certain type of work and have to learn something new. Give it a try, but be patient!

I am so happy that...... - Perplexed in Ohio

Thanks so much for your replies. I am happy to hear this. I have always been a firm believer that if you can do acute care....you can do about anything. I believe a lot of it will be editing the VR dictation. Its an hourly paid position though and I am so happy to be getting out of this dog-eat-dog grind I have been in lately. : )

So happy for you sm - HeidiHo

I'm sure you had done radiology during your acute care years. Once you get a hang of the new terminology that they've added over the past few years, it's basically repetition of the same thing over & over ... you'll do fine.

With an in-house job, at least you'll get some breathing room & a learning curve, i.e., they'll most likely cut you some slack ... you'll rarely get this as a home-based MT.

I did it - Easy peasy

I went from doing multispecialty clinic to acute care and then relocated. I had no radiology experience but the practice hired me anyway and said I'd learn with no problem.

I had one outdated thin little book of Rad terms, no internet or anything, and an old Dorlands.

I was very comfortable and having no problem whatsoever within a week or less.

Radiology is very repetitive (in fact, I went back to acute care and clinic because I find it very repetitive to the point of becoming boring). Once you get the basic terms down, you'll be fine.

I consider radiology an easy money-maker; because of its repetitive nature, it's easy to build up your normals really quickly and use them effectively, especially for techniques, etc.

Good luck to you and you'll be fine :)

Sure you can! I have seen many people do this quite successfully. (My company once had a huge rad account and people made the transition very easily.) I am happy for you and congratulate you on your new job!

Of course you can. I transitioned from Rad to - Acute Care with no problems.

Just takes a little time to get used to some different terms and procedures. Also, after nearly 10 years in Acute Care, I recently transitioned back to Radiology almost seamlessly.

Calling Me On My Day Off To Do OT
Sep 16, 2013

First, let me say, I do like my TSM, she is great and I know she is only doing as she is instructed, but where do these people get the nerve to call me on my day off and think I will stop what I'm doing and help them?  The audacity is mind boggling.  Cut our pay, put most of us in financial ruin, expect more and more for less and less pay and then you want ME to help YOU?  If it wasn't so pathetic, it would almost be funny.  How stupid or maybe greedy do y ...

I AM NOT NAME CALLING ...
Jun 17, 2015

I'm trying to give you all a wake up! I've worked my whole life (50 years) and have never been paid for only half my work. What I'm doing doesn't matter. You have to decide what you're going to do. Voice recognition will get better and medical providers will buy their own. Why pay companies like Nuance to edit when they can do it themselves? Why do you think Nuance is selling Dragon? They know exactly what's coming and want to milk the industry for all they can. In ...

Question About Being PT And Calling In Sick...
Dec 16, 2009

Just came from Acute Care.  I have strep throat and I will be heading off to bed.  I've worked at MQ for 3 years and never ever called in sick.  My super is on PT.  Even so, I will call and leave her a message.  I have no PTO time.  Will I be required to make this up?  ...

Every Person Here Should Be Calling Their Congressman And Asking Why

Calling Macro Diva
Sep 29, 2013

Just wondering if it's okay/possible to put my "Call" macros back towards the end of General_Macro? And if so, where?  I tried moving them to just before End Sub and also before Page 1:Selection..., but those locations didn't work.  I'm getting an occasional errant "g" or "L" (apparently related to the GramLiter macro) at the very beginning of my VR text when I run it now, which I didn't have at all before when the "called' macros were at the end.  Was part of the fix ...

I Feel Like Calling Up My QAM And Asking HER What I Should Put In This Report.
Dec 12, 2013

Did the doctor change his mind on the patient's position, or is it just a gap because he got distracted and repeated himself. Gee, should I put modified or not put in that word? I would say the doctor was distracted and repeated himself, but who knows (except QA). I have been smacked too many times to make any decision. This is what happens when you treat a dog like we have been treated - too leary to take any action! Should have included that in the company survey! ...

Calling On Macro Diva Again, If You're Still About.
May 15, 2014

I don't know where to begin with trying to record a macro for this need myself.  On my main account, we're required to list meds without any following punctuation, but due to other MTSOs also subbing on it (who apparently don't have any specs or just don't have to follow the same specs we do), the lists invariably come through on VR with totally inconsistent punctuation.  Such as this: MEDICATIONS:Ativan,ZofranDexamethasone.DiltiazemLanoxin. But should be this: M ...

Calling All Andrews Grads

AHDI, Or AAMT..or Whatever They Are Calling Themselves These Days
Jul 11, 2011

If anything..they are simply a  Sales Convention for MTSOs and only have their interest at heart.  There are never topics that relate to working as an MT or being properly represented.  Instead we get the never ending changing BOS, or the CMT certification which AGAIN has changed...and btw..took a look a "sample" test and it has NOTHING to do with being an MT!  It was more for a clinician.  We are language specialists..not clinicians.  I have been an MT for over 20 ...

How Long To Wait Before Calling After Sending Resume?
Aug 04, 2011

For the first time in 6 years, I am job hunting.   Sadly, things seem to be going downhill fast with the employer I have been with for just over 6 years now and I have a strong feeling that it's time for me to start exploring other options.   I just dusted off and updated my resume and sent it to a couple of companies who have ads posted.   It has been so long since I have had to apply for jobs.   My question is how long to you wait after sending your resume before follo ...

Calling To Register With Andrews Soon - Ready To Leave MT Sm
Mar 28, 2012

I had been wondering how I was going to come up with a down payment to register for the Andrews coding course and it looks like I will be able to do it in a week.  I am so happy I could cry buckets.   I have not been an MT as long as some, but I entered the field because I love research and anything medical related.  When I started as an MT, MTSOs still wanted blanks and everything else researched for as perfect a document as possible.  I still have issues with spending ...

Anyone Have Secret Fantasies Of Anonymously Calling The Facility--sm

and educating them about what truly constitutes a STAT.  Just because something is dictated by a resident does not mean it is a stat, especially if the discharge was 4 months ago.  Of course, I also have fantasies of conducting a class for residents, helping them to utilize their critical thinking skills and critically evaluate the pertinent information for the report instead of talking for 30-45 minutes about stuff that does not need to be on the chart for the umpteenth time.  If ...

How To Make M*Modal Stop Incessantly Calling Me? I DON'T WANT TO WORK FOR THEM
Jul 09, 2012

I am so sorry if this has been posted before. I looked but didn't see any other posts. I applied with M*Modal a while back but landed a different MT job that I'm happy with. But these people still will NOT stop e-mailing me and calling me and leaving automated voicemail messages. ONE voicemail message is quite enough. Can I Get Some Input On PTO Please.
Jul 11, 2011

We only have 3.?? hours every pay period of PTO until after 4 years with the company.  I was off last week and for each day for PTO I indicated 7 hours per day.  This will give me 1 extra day of PTO over the year at 7 hours pay.  I do not know if that is allowed, they may require us to indicate 8 if we took the whole day off.  Will see what happens about that.  I wish I could put 6 hours per day, leaving me more hours of PTO. We have 2 days paid sick time, which I have ...

Thanks For The Input
Jan 11, 2012

I am very happy to have found this forum. I thank you all for the input on companies. I worked for a company for three years and was frustrated to the point of going nuts. I broke three keyboards and threw books at the wall. I had never experienced this when I worked directly for a practice and had to leave there too. I messed up my left wrist trying to make the lines they expected and took 10-12 a day since their platform was so very slow. I ended up taking a medical month leave of absen ...
