Taking an IC job with Nuance accounts: Dangerous - MT1965

Posted: Nov 19th, 2017 - 11:00 am

Since the bad incident with Nuance a few months ago, small companies and M Modal took on the work Nuance could not produce.  As a result, the work got done, but some people did not get paid (M Modal ICs recently); some companies folded (Skyscription and others); some companies stopped entirely that we know of or at least laid a lot of people off (TTS, and others). Now, Nuance has laid off tons of MTs, and is having to answer to the government for the bad incident.  The next day we heard that, we found out Nuance is suing M Modal for software infringement or something like that.  Now, there are at least 4 that I can count anyway small companies which are taking on the accounts from Nuance but are still having to answer to Nuance, making the situation very dicey as far as MTs are concerned. MTs take on these jobs but the hospitals or Nuance can pull the work out at any given time without notice and being ICs, and not under the protection of unemployment insurance, these MTs can lose everything in an instant with just the lock of a cue or system.  This is the state of the MT industry as we see it on this board.  My word of advice to those involved:  If you are working for a company having nothing to do with Nuance software or M Modal software as much as you may dislike it STAY THERE FOR NOW.  If you want to take on work which is an IC for a company that was suddenly awarded a big account or accounts with Nuance software (Escription, etc.) take it but know you may not get paid (many contracts do not pay but a month from the beginning of the work), or the company may lose the account or fold. Be aware that your bills CANNOT depend on such a company and use this as only something as a fly by night.  When looking for another job know there are thousands of MTs looking who have already been laid off and are competing for whatever REAL JOBS are out there which are few.  Now, look to the future. Hang on to your job through the holidays. See what happens with Nuance, the government, its lawsuit with M Modal, and then when that has settled perhaps you can make your move. But know that for now the small IC companies which are taking you on with Nuance or M Modal software are NOT stable.  Keep whatever stable income you have. This is my take on the situation. Please it's the holidays. Finances are the #1 cause of stress, and stress is a #2 killer. Keep in touch with those who can give you reality checks in the world. Keep in touch with a therapist, or friend who can let you know it is not you. This career is NOT going away, but the bad MTSOs who have been yanking our chains are undergoing a bit awakening and with that we do not need to be part of their journey. Be safe financially, emotionally, and be prepared. Thanks for listening to my take on the current situation in our industry.
