hyphenated words question please - sm

mild to moderate artery stenosis mid to distal LAD, etc... Do you all put hyphens to make it mild-to-moderate? mid-to-distal?

hyphenated - pickygirl

Neither of these terms should be hyphenated

It depends on a lot of things, client preference, etc.; however, the correct way is to hyphenate multiple words when used as an adjective. In this case, these are adjectives and, IMHO, should be hyphenated. Mid to distal describes LAD and mild to moderate describes artery stenosis. If these words were at the end of a sentence, for example, "the artery stenosis was mild to moderate" then no hyphens are necessary.

I should have clarified when I originally answered - specifically for M-Modal. I asked this exact question of my MModal PC several weeks ago and was told that per MModal Style Guide, "directional" terms that include a preposition are not hyphenated regardless of the part of speech they represent, as the word "to" actually takes the place of the hyphen. Using the hyphens in this term "mid-to-distal would actually translate to "mid to to to distal", which is rather redundant all over again, dontcha think? :)

Thanks since Im with MM - sm

I will go with Pickygirl, even though, all along I have been hyphenating. ASR throws me off, sometimes does, sometimes doesn't..Mind can only keep so much straight. I've never been gigged one way or the other because I don't think anyone knows correct from incorrect anymore.
I have never heard...sm - PT

of a hyphen representing the word "to." Very strange indeed. That wouldn't even make sense on most hyphenated compound adjectives such as black-and-blue marks would mean black to and to blue marks. Makes no sense to me. ;)
Even for directional adjectives...sm - PT

especially if it modifies a noun. I guess that's what makes it hard when your client or QA expects something done one way even though rules, especially old rules, say something else. :)

Either way, it is grammatically correct to type "mild-to-moderate aortic stenosis."

M-Modal is free to make up any style choices they like, but it doesn't make them correct. The word "to" does not take the place of a hyphen - except, perhaps, if it were typed "mild-moderate aortic stenosis." However, when it is spoken, the correct way to transcribe it is "mild-to-moderate aortic stenosis."

agree with pickygirl - neither should be hyphenated

You are correct that the word "to" and also the word "and" take the place of the hyphen and therefore hyphenating those phrases and similar phrases is redundant. This is based on my years of working as an editor for a large publishing company, not in the MT field. Truthfully, the BOS people make up their own rules that do not necessarily follow standard editorial rules.

Here's a good list of when to use hyphens:

I use this all the time - sm

I work for MM too and since punctuation seems to vary depending on your current PC/POD/mood of the day, I found this site to be very useful. So when I'm dinged for something that is not covered in the BOS/CP/MM guidelines, I can forward the info. It has helped me several times when I have challenged an audit.
