Our facility allows some latitude, so I would recast both:

"He has not become lost while driving."

"He has had a workup."

Gotten in this case makes perfect sense and is not incorrect. We would get dinged for it. Not our job to change dictation.

in their examples, since acc to their caveatsk this example

"They've gotten a new boat. (= obtain)"

shows also "possession," but tbey use it in this example, anyway.

BTW: Both examples given by the OP do NOT belong to the supposed "caveats," and the usage of "gotten" in both examples is CORRECT.

Gotten is a perfectly legitimate word. I checked Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary just in case I was misinformed in 5th grade. It's in there. It's the past participle of get. If it's good enough for a good English dictionary, it's good enough for me.

exactly the same on every report and you have put his ROS and PE in your abbreviation expander, but sometimes he will dictate something out of order. For example, the dictator still says the same exact things he always says, but sometimes instead of saying "EXTREMTIES: No clubbing, cyanosis or edema."
