The patient is hospitalized. The child is immunized. The disease is characterized. The pedicle is vascularized. The pain is localized or generalized.

Adding ize to words is a common practice. Language is constantly evolving and we need to accept the changes.

If a doctor dictated it that way, I would type it that way. We owe them an accurate spelling of their exact words, as long as it is consistent with the context of the report and similar to how other words are spelled.

I would not change the word to something else just because I never heard it before. That's putting words into a doctor's mouth. They have a medical degree and know what they need to say. They are in charge of their dictation, not us.

comatose - sm

Comatose is an adjective, not a verb.

Your examples - hospitalize, immunize, characterize, vascularize, localize, and generalize - are already verbs. No one "added -ize" to them.

Remember: We do not know the sentence in which this word is being used, as the OP did not provide it and no one asked.
