bruit or bruits? - l224

Does it matter? Is one plural? The sentence is "good carotid pulse without bruit."

thanks!

I have used "bruits" before, but was looking up to see how to decide what is appropriate when. Actually, I do not see bruit with "s" added for a pleural. I don't think I was ever supposed to be using bruits. I would type it without the s.

bruits is plural - many dictionaries to not waste space - listing all plural word endings

If you believe the Harvard Medical School Dictionary, bruits is the plural of bruit.

carotid bruit: An abnormal sound heard with a stethoscope in the carotid artery; people who have carotid bruits have a greater risk of having a stroke.

The sentence given by the OP is singular and is correct as typed.

"good carotid pulse without bruit." (single word: pulse, single word:  bruit, so plural would not be necessary.  If it would have been plural, both should be plural:  "good carotid pulses without bruits").

I have found that many dictionaries do not waste space by listing plural words that use "s" which is the general rule.    They only list plural words that have different endings.

Glad that I haven't been doing it wrong all this time. Thanks for the info!
