Staph or staph - sm

Posted: May 21, 2011

Dictated:  ..... to rule out staph infection.

In this instance, is "staph" capitalized or no?

Thank you.

the way I remember it is if it is a whole name, such as Staphylococcus aureus, et cetera, is used then it would be capitalized. i don't capitalize staph infection myself though

lowercase, unless the species is given. - i.e., staph infection but Staph aureus. nm
