"All other review of systems (was/were) negative."

I am having a dispute with someone over this and could use someone's expertise to make certain of the answer.  Thank you.

were... - sm

like saying all were negative.

was/were - good question

This is a tricky one, QA has (have?) corrected me either way. Review WAS negative. Systems WERE negative. Other WAS. Others WERE. Can anyone document the correct answer?

Review of systems - Cat

all other review of systems WAS negative ... review of systems is one entity, thus needs the single verb.

agree!! - phew!

it's was. Review (of systems) was negative. Review of your baby pictures was fun.

I agree with 'were' - sm - sigher

"All other" is the subject. It's as if you were saying, "All other cars were blue."

but... - sm

I do agree with the poster who stated that "review of systems" is one entity, therefore should be "was." Using your example of "all other cars were blue" could also be "all other history" WAS negative, you wouldn't say "all other history WERE negative." It can be so confusing. Anyone know what BOS says?

the correct word is was - hmmm

The words all other describes systems, not review. A review was done or restated "a review of all other systems" was...

A systems was not performed. All others was not performed.

This is not a BOS question. It is a grammar question.
or maybe not... - hmmm

I've been sitting here working and this sentence won't get out of my head!

So now with some thought, I can agree that "all" is the noun. "All were negative."

This is where I get into trouble sometimes from my past life as a coder. This will probably be in my dreams tonight, ugh!

"All other" is not the subject. Those are adjectives modifying the subject, which is "review." "Of systems" is a prepositional phrase and doesn't affect subject-verb agreement. The verb that agrees with that singular noun is "was." "Negative" is a predicate adjective.

In your example sentence, "cars" is the subject. "Were" is the verb. "Blue" is a predicate adjective.

In the OP's example, the problem is that the speaker is not being careful. Mixing singular subjects and plural modifiers, which the MT is left to massage into something coherent.

Three options: Use "was" and change "all other" to something like "the rest of": The rest of the review of systems was negative."

Or change to "all other systems reviewed were negative."

Or as another poster says, drop the verb altogether.

All other review of systems negative. - Drop the verb if you can

If you must put a verb, I would use "was".

I think the doc is mixing metaphors, so to speak. These are correct:
Other review of systems was negative.
All other systems were negative.

In "review of systems", "review" is the subject, not "systems". Throwing in "all other" complicates the matter.

I would say was. Doctors dictate both ways. If you drop "of systems" and just look at review, it would be "was."

Expertise Needed
May 20, 2010

Hi any help would be so much appreciated! I am thinking of going into MT. I have done a lot of research, some (well more than some) is negative as far as gaining employment, but then there are the positive comments. This is something that I really want to do, so I am going for it.. Can anyone please tell me if it would benefit me at all to get an AAS in Medical Transcription or would I be wasting my time and money. It is costly.   Thank you in advance to anyone who could help me out.. & ...

Just did a VR report where in the lab section, the VR cut off the first bit, but I'll bet most of you could fill in what was missing from context and by just knowing what should be there FROM EXPERIENCE. LABORATORY DATA: _____ 3.5, hemoglobin 9.8, platelets 229.  I think that warrants being paid at least our regular, LOUSY, depreciated rate of 8 bloody cents a line instead of HALF of that.   ...

Computer Died Unexpectedly....seeking Expertise
Jan 21, 2013

My computer was fine last night but this morning had apparently committed suicide during the night. After powering it off and back on, I received the Dell/Windows screen that normally comes up, then it went to a black screen with the message "NO BOOT DEVICE AVAILABLE." Has anyone else ever encountered this and is it fixable?  I do have a backup computer but I had a lot of information on the hard drive of the other computer I'd love to be able to recover. TIA! ...
