Tablet? - sm

Posted: Apr 19, 2013

Forgive my ignorance, but I was wondering if anyone uses a tablet for transcription?  I am assuming you would need an external keyboard, but I am not familiar enough with the newest technology.  Are there headphone jacks and USB ports like laptops?   I want to be more portable.  Or is a laptop my only option?  Thank you.

Might be to contact your company's IT dept and find out what the computer requirements are for whatever programming they use. Then, you can pass that info on to a tech salesperson (I'd bypass Wallie World and any places like those) to see what a tablet's capabilities, etc. are. I'm not technie-literate enough to give an answer, but that is where I would start. :)

I believe the answer to that would be a resounding NO. Tablets for one thing, do not have memory that desktops or laptops do, nor do they have the speed or hard drive capabilities that a laptop or desktop would have. There are also no USB ports on a tablet, hence no way to use a footpedal. For a little bit more than the pice of a tablet, you can get a laptop computer.

I pretty much agree with this, - but you might try

the Lenovo Yoga or that new Microsoft Surface tablet, which I think may have the computing power and USB ports. These do cost a lot though ($800 plus). Otherwise you are stuck with a laptop. I have used a net book with DQS and it worked well and was very portable and not very pricey, just no CD port.

I'm thinking of getting an Android tablet to use mostly at home, in what is laughingly called my leisure time.  I don't know much about how to set it up or install a wireless router.  Is it a very complicated process to set up and is there a steep learning curve to use it?  I don't want to spend any money till I know what's involved.  Any help is appreciated!   ...
