Conserving energy - Cloverport

Posted: Oct 15, 2010

We just heard through the grapevine that our utility company is going to up prices this winter 70%, YIKES!  We already heat our home with corn.  My question is, and I have heard it both ways, which is more economical, turning your computer off when not in use, or keeping it on?  Trying to cut corners here.  TIA.

I have always heard to turn your computer off - smj

overnight or when not in use for a prolonged period of time. It really does conserve electricity, just like not leaving chargers in when not in use. It really makes sense, if it is not on, you are not using electricity.

Off and unplug. - sm

Our electricity rates are extremely high here. We keep everything not in use unplugged including computer and TV. Even when things are turned off, they still use energy when plugged in, about 40% of what they do when on, so you can save quite a bit just by unplugging. At first my husband thought I was crazy and was annoyed with my unplugging everything, but is happy now as I have been able to shave $100 off our monthly bill by unplugging things, hand washing dishes instead of using the dishwasher, and washing our clothes in cold. We have also just gotten a tankless water heater and hung up a clothes line (warm here year round), so hoping to get our bill down even further soon.

Thank you - Cloverport

Thank you guys so much for replying. Wow, even unplugging! I never thought of that. I am definitely going to start making these things a habit. In today's economy, you have to think smart!

Sure Could Use Some POSITIVE Energy

Not everyone is unhappy with MT work right now.  Lots of times this board is filled with much negativity and I think it is a disservice to each other.  Sometimes we need to vent, but sure would like to see people with more positive things that are happening in their life post on here, and not just read on here.  I think it is unfair to dissuade newcomers to the profession.  Give them an accurate vision of what it is like, both pros and cons.  But, I think it's wron ...
