Was talking to a friend, who is on disability now, a former MT and is BRINGING HOME more than me a month. Was talking to a neighbor, who is on Welfare, who has MORE FOOD in her house than I do, and better medical care. This is ridiculous.

[ In Reply To ..]I would get half of what I am getting now, not to mention it takes 2 years for Medicaid to kick in, so I'd have to pay for my own health insurance. My sister is on disability and gets $35/month in food stamps. So I'm sorry, but it doesn't always work out the way you say.

[ In Reply To ..]It took my husband almost 2 years to be approved, but he has a cousin who went on long-term disability through her work for 6 months, applied for SS and was approved the 1st time. But if you qualify, you apply for SS Disability for SSI - that way you will get Medicaid until you are approved. We have 2 family members who applied for SSI and received Medicaid until they were approved, then it switched to Medicare and/or Medicaid as secondary. (There is a family genetic disease in my husband's family - which is why so many are on SS.) Good luck to you. It's hard to get approved, but you've paid into SS and should be able to receive it when you need it.

[ In Reply To ..]They are 2 different things. Medicaid for low income, Medicare for Social Security age 65 or disabled. You get Medicare at 65. Or have to wait 2 years from when you get your first social security disability check (and a 5-month wait to get THAT) unless you have end-stage kidney disease in which case you get it right away. If you are very low income your state pitches in and gives you Medicaid (what we used to call Welfare insurance) with no waiting period.

If you are awarded Social Security Disability and do not qualify for Medicaid, you have to wait 2 years to get Medicare. So...I figure...if you get your arms and legs cut off but your spouse makes over 21,000 a year but no health insurance, YOU HAVE NO MEDICAL FOR 2 YEARS !!?? HUH? Weird huh?

By the first of the year I'll be eligible for SS, but I'm going to try to stick it out for one more year before taking it, so I'll get the full payout. I'm still looking for work, of course, but it's not too likely anything will ever pan out. If that's the case, and "The System" wants a perfectly healthy, robust 65-year-old who passes for 40 to be forcibly retired, then so be it.

I'm a disabled MT (Radiology) and am able to earn $720 per month per govt guidelines. I had the ideal job until recently thanks to VR. I was able to work a few hours each day until I reached my $720 limit. Don't think I could work 8 hours at this point so giving up my disability is doubtful as I have lung damage. My current MTSO gave me the option of employee status or IC. I chose IC. My wife just went on short-term disability and so far has received a check for 3 days that is peanuts. I'm getting zero help from benefits/PR on this and Hartford is really pathetic. I know you get 50 percent, but 50 percent of what? She's a Level III MT. Just a new graduate question. What is the difference in pay rate when transcribing medical claims assessment reports for the doctors. Apparently it is alittle more because the Dr. charges the insurance companies @$200-$400 per report. I am helping a local physician with some of his "overflow", but want fair pay.
