Volunteering? - smith

Posted: Aug 17, 2010

I am still a student 1/2 way finished with an MT certificate. The job possibilities for an inexperienced MT with or without a certificate look pretty bleak :/ So, I was thinking about maybe volunteering or accepting low pay for work overflow just to get some experience. Does anyone know where I would even begin finding companies that would allow me to volunteer?

Don't work for free - you're worth more than that. nm - mtmtmt

Please think this through. MT is what we do for a LIVING. This is how we support our families. If people start working for free, there will be no paying jobs. MTSOs will start (ab)using newbies and getting them to work for free. Don't do it--for this and many other reasons.

no, no, no. Do not cheapen yourself by working - for free or for a low cpl. NM

I never IC'd but had friends who were constantly on the lookout for someone to handle overflow on their accounts. I did subcontract once for a friend who was working for a large clinic. Of course the "shaft the newbie" factor is way, way less when you are dealing with a real live person. Any chance of finding an MT in your area who would allow you to subcontract?
