Hello - I have a question - im trying to pick out an MT school and I have just talked to one of them that said they do not offer a footpedal because they believe the footpedal will be obsolete in a few years. Now I have never ever heard of this before but thought I would check with you all to see if anyone has ever heard this and what software programs actually allow you to work without a footpedal. TIA

Transcriptionist will be obsolete in a few more years, not the foot pedals..My foot pedal is at least 9 years old and its no different then the one I had for 10 years before that...

How would you manipulate the voice file to type it without a foot pedal? Do they not have dictation/transcription built into their course? It is necessary, the more the better.

What school is this? A lot of them are hacks and way overpriced.

I wonder if they are saying that MT is headed for, in the doctor's offices anyway, certified medical assistants using drop-down menus typing in the exam room with the patient and the doctor. Some are asking for this, now. So, there would be no dictation. No need for a foot pedal.

I've worked all day today and made only 32 dollars, subtract my self-employment tax and income tax I pay quarterly but take out of each paycheck and it's much less. I'm going to hang out in the work pool until around midnight in case one or two more reports trickle in like I did last night. I'll be doing online coursework or teaching myself HTML and CSS at Codecademy while I wait. My alarm will go off at 6:30 in the morning. When I get up, the first thing I'll do is turn my computer on. Then go make a cup of coffee and let my dogs out. You want a 7:00 or 7:30 to midnight day and if there would be work tomorrow, I'd be in there fighting for it, maybe not tomorrow it's a new pay period. And you don't want to know how little I've made this pay period. I have nearly 21 years of experience. I do ops, used to because it was so profitable.

I've taught MT and I was going to sell a SUM Program/practice dictation/and depending on people's progress, internship package for way less than the cheapest school out there but didn't feel it would be right to take anyone's money in this environment and set them on the path to MT. I couldn't honestly encourage anybody at this juncture. It felt like it would be wrong, like I would be cheating people. So, I let it go. I'm sending my resume out to non-transcription work. You'd be better off learning billing, scheduling, coding, things like that. Excel is an awesome skill - so marketable with that. Microsoft Office Suite. Legal secretaries make 30,000+ a year. You aren't going to get anywhere close to that in MT. I'm going back to school for computer science and I've just realized I'm not going to be able to stay in MT (at this rate) to work at home while I do that but it's okay because it really isn't flexible after all when you're fighting for work. That's just my story. Other people are different. But it's not the rosiest of pictures whichever one you look at. You're about 20 years too late and even then that was the beginning of the end. The schools and the MTSOs are still making money off of MT. Just not the MTs themselves.

Unless MTs can come together and turn it around, this is not an industry/career to try to build a future on. Unless you don't really need a job and are just looking for something to do from home while your kids are in school and the hubby is at work. But if future MTs don't need a foot pedal, then there won't be many home-based MTs working.

IMANMT2, I agree completely, but would suggest that you consider applying to Rev.com. I retired early from MT a couple of years ago because of how horrible MT has become and now work part-time with Rev.com. The pay isn't great, but you can set your own hours and work is almost always available whenever you are. They're very reputable, pay weekly via Paypal and are nice people to work for. After the initial "Rookie" stage, full-time pay could approach $450+.

I'm over testing for the Q on their test site and thought I had installed my foot pedal but it's not working. Does anyone know how to use your foot pedal on the test rather than that silly F1 function key to start and stop the audio? Does anyone have an idea of what could be wrong with my foot pedal? While I am working, sometimes when I lift up my foot to stop the dictation, it keeps playing like the pedal is stuck or something. Hello:) I just got a new computer and was in the process of moving my foot pedal over to it, and to my shock, there is no outlet in the back of the new one that is compatible with my old foot pedal, which is a DB9 outlet, there are only USB ports back there. I have a foot petal that has an end on it that looks like a telephone cord plug end. It attaches into another piece which fits into the back of my computer.
