I am sorry, but I do not understand why you want to "appear." Appear where?

Why don't you contact AHDI? (BTW, in my humble opinion, you are wasting your time and money on the CMT. It will not enhance your chances of getting a job.)
I beg to differ - MT

I have worked at many companies that offer incentives and more pay if you are certified. Stop giving people the advice that it does them no good...when people go through school, they 1) like to have the recognition, and 2) companies do offer perks. As well, if you are running up against 4 people who are highly qualified and you are the only one with your credentials, who do you think they are going to look to first?

I am going to look at their schools, skills, and ability. You know, things that really matter. Have a nice day.

Preparing and sitting for the Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) exam is an honorable thing to do, and the CMT is finally beginning to get the respect it deserves from employers.

The best MTs I've known and hired over my own very long career were and are CMTs. Occasionally I've run into someone who said they were "certified" and did really horrible work. It turned out that they were not CMTs. They just had attended some (I started to say sleazy, but that isn't polite) inadequate school that misinformed them by telling them they would be "certified" when they finished. Some schools misinforming their students aren't sleazy at all. They just don't know better. Instructors are often just graduates that the community college hired right out of school to teach the next semester. They thought they were certified and have taught all their students the same. There's no way to stop that until all instructors are CMTs.

The real CMTs that I've worked with have been knowledgeable and capable, to a person. That doesn't mean that non-CMTs can't be just as good, but there is no documentation that demonstrates it, nothing that tells me that they care enough to have put that extra effort into studying for and accomplishing credentials.

I know many non-CMTs who have had a long and successful career in medical transcription. They have neither wanted nor needed that CMT. They've done well without it and wonder why anyone else would bother. It's almost insulting to think that someone with initials after their name would get more respect than they would, because those initials don't make one a better CMT. That's the point though. MTs are doing better with that CMT after their name. It is working for them, and it's working for the employers that hire them too.

Applicants with a CMT still have to pass the same employment tests that anyone else does, of course, but I have fewer questions about them. I know they have the ability to pay very careful attention to detail. I know that they have motivation, intelligence, and guts!

Some of the non-CMT applicants may also have some or all of those things, but how do I know? They will have to make their case in other ways, if I have more job openings after hiring the CMTs.

Hiring the CMTs first certainly makes my life easier. They take less time with corrections, abuse of flagging or editing too much. They obviously have critical thinking skills, because those are required in order to pass the test. I know because I am a CMT. The CMT has skills that can be documented. That is important. It's worth money to the employer and to the CMT.

On the question of how to prepare for the CMT, first, contact your school. They will be able to guide you.

It is fine to have differing viewpoints on this. That is what makes horse racing. :) My main beef with the CMT is that is comes from an organization that has historically supported both offshoring and has also been in the business bed with MedQuist, which has exploited MTs mercilessly. I do not wish to support anything done by an organization that so willingly has aided and abetted the slaughter of the American worker. For me, it is an objection based on moral principle.
I understand. Hopefully the people who made those decisions are long gone - Wiping The Slate Clean

I certainly agree with you about that. I've been red in the face about it. We've had some ignorant people on the BOD, etc. Since they are the only game in town, I'm relieved that some of the people who have made the poorest decisions are gone. I felt like celebrating when they left. In fact, I may have!

Old Pro, you cannot check MY schooling - because I learned on the job

I began literally at my mother's knee, many decades ago.

So you can check my work history, and you can see something of my skill level on an employment screening test... but unless you call my mom, you can't check my school. :D (And she's just a wee bit prejudiced.)

However, you can also see the initials CMT after my name, and that should tell you something about my knowledge base. :)
