Had a discussion with a physician who recently went to EMR. Their office is now using some sort of point and click system, which he says is working well for them. I shared with him I am concerned that sort of system is going to put me out of work. He made the comment that MTs will have a job for maybe another couple of years.

I am curious what everyone else predicts. How long before we will no longer be needed?

I think that it might work well for clinics or independent doctors, but not big hospitals. I think even in clinics, patients will not be happy with having to talk to a doctor that has his face in a computer while being there. I think there are doctors that don't want to have their face in a computer while visiting with a patient. I guess it just depends on the doctor. I don't buy that it will put us out of business. Have you ever done point and click things. They never have what I need. What if what is wrong with me is not on the point and click system? Are the doctors just going to put other or pick something close to it?

In my doctor office the doc has a medical assistant/physician's assistant/nurse that follows him around carrying the laptop and she points and clicks for the doc and if he has a note to add he tells her and she adds it. Nothing for the MT to do. I asked him if he liked the EMR and he does not because he is one of those windy doctors that likes to dictate details and huge reports but he said he didn't have a choice because the people he works for says use EMR or no job for you doc. I am going back to school for phlebotomy...can't do that on a laptop lol

My sister-in-law works for a large clinic of over 50 physicians. She told me that they have two transcriptionist for all 50 doctors. They use the point and click method and if the doctors need to add something more they are charged for their dictation. That would inhibit docs not using EMR.
They also only have seven coders for that facility.

That is happening with my current physician. I talk, he has his face in his computer. Also, he is the 4th doctor I have seen at that practice. If they don't work fast enough and bring in enough revenue, they are gone. They said they are under a great amount of pressure as well. Being sick is just a busines now.

I work in a 200-bed hospital and it is down for enough work for one, maybe two MTs if one is out. They do it all on templates. Also, physicial assistants are doing it for docs as well. The few docs who still dictate get 'scolded' and warned that they had better 'get w/the program--and soon.' MT work will be LUCKY to last 2 yrs. Coding is next.

Where I work, suddenly Medicare/Medicaid has been cracking down on the docs. They all have to revise their "normals". Now MC wants full ROS, numbered impressions, etc. Can't see them accepting or tolerating a checklist of diagnoses or symptoms.

I don't buy into that at all. EMR is not even close to nationwide. - phooey

6 or 7 of them who don't even know how to turn on a computer, and don't want to learn.
