The "tell us who you work for" mentality - Stop being so lazy

I find it incredibly lazy of the MTs who constantly post "so tell us who you work for" when an MT shares a positive experience.

How do you think those of us who have good gigs got them?  Do you think someone called us up, said, "Hey, this is a good company," applied for us, got us in or whatever?  No.  We did the research.  We kissed the frogs but were smart enough to know when a frog WAS a frog.

If you are in a work situation that does not work for you-- WHY ARE YOU THERE? 

There are really GOOD and even GREAT companies out there to work for, but you do have to look for them.  You do have to do the research and the footwork.

Most companies like this hire only when necessary.  So if you're monitoring the job boards, then it really doesn't take a rocket scientist to notice when a new or rarely seen company comes up there. 

The "gimme" generation must include a bunch of the posters here.  Thank goodness there are other MTs though still willing to do the research and know what works for them.

But they all "sound" good. We just don't want - to jump out of a frying

and have gotten lied to. I don't think you can entirely blame a "gimme generation" for the frustration of people who want to find a good job as an MT. Obviously, you know there are companies who meet their TAT by hiring anyone who applies but take no responsibility that they succeed.

They make them install their own software, do their own review of the account specs, etc., etc., and cannot answer any question about the job because they are "just the office manager and have never done MT". These facts are rarely if ever disclosed during testing and interviewing. These people, not understanding the vaguest thing about working on production in an MT environment, say "yes" to everything you want to hear so they can hire you and get you paying their wage.

If you run across disillusioned people who have spent hours & days at jobs where they cannot succeed, you don't have to throw them a bone about your great company but you might be a little less condescending. You smirk and say research is key...well, if you're being lied to by everyone who wants to hire a warm body, it's kind of like hitting the lottery. Be happy you're a winner.

want to hear - just not truthfully. I asked about communication at a company, and I was told by the owner/CEO/bigshot that everyone got on a conference call once a month to discuss issues, exchange information, etc. It just was not true, not at the time or ever. Then, once I had time invested in this company, all I heard was "I'm just this...I have no control over that...I've never done transcription before." Never heard from the bigshot again, either.

I am glad for you that your job search ended successfully, but for many others it isn't that easy trying to balance giving a job a fair shot, not looking like you're always job hopping, having bills to pay regardless if you've been misinformed, etc.

Learn the process - A Happy MT

If you're in a job now where you have down-time, use that down-time to apply to other companies. Don't leave the job you have, not even if you take a new job. For two weeks, do what you have to do to do both jobs. You know in 2 weeks if the new company is worth it or not. If not, leave. You still have the unhappy job you had and you can go right back to testing and applying.

Know ahead of time that there are many happy MTs at the large services. But the ratio of happy to unhappy MTs is probably equal. In the smaller companies, you have a much higher ratio of happy MTs. And since that's what the service wants (afterall, happy MTs are productive MTs), they tend to weed out the unhappy MTs on their end too.

It can be done. It takes work. It takes perseverence, it takes time and research and gathering the knowledge of the other companies out there.

Yes, I have always found it amazing how much time the negative folks spend dissing people who (a) like their jobs and (b) are high producers. Aside from need to not judge our production by their abilities, they also need to spend less time accusing others of lying--perhaps if they spent as much time working on their own skills, they would be high producers, too. Name-calling and making accusatory comments is the cheapest sellout there is.

maybe if work was available and not a shortage we would not be so negative. Over staffing is a problem with many companies and accounts, just maybe if you were in the same position you would understand. Not a cheap sellout, just the fact that we cannot be high producers if the work is not there. If you were in the same position, you would probably be on here complaining as well. I was hired for an account that went to VR 1 week later, of which I was not informed. Yes, I am looking for another job, but in the meantime I am stuck here making next to nothing until I find something, not everyone has it as good as you. Empathy is a great quality.

the time off wisely. When the company failed to have work enough times, then I moved on. On down time, I took classes, researched other companies, did retail work for friends, did merchandising, and typed papers for students. I always had many irons in the fire. Still do. You don't have it any worse off than anyone else. You just want to believe that you do.

I've been with many a company that overhired and lied to me up front about the average workflowm even when I specifically - point blank - say before signing on that I need XXXX-amount of lines a day as a high producer. Frustrating as that may be, it has nothing to do with where another MT works or is capable of producing.

I don't want to know where you work so I can apply there. I want to know where you work, to see if anybody else has said anything about that company - that totally contradicts what you're saying. It's nothing personal, and it's not laziness - but c'mon - anybody can post anything, say anything on a message board. Why, tomorrow, I could post with another email address, and start raving about what a great company I work at, I'm producing so much, and ridiculing people who are having a harder time of it. Maybe I'll do that...and then after a month of people responding to my posts, and telling me I lack empathy - I'll say no, I've been faking it all the time, to make the point that anybody can post here - could be some teenagers who think its great fun to ridicule MTs who are in a tough spot because of management decisions made in a non-union and anti-union working environment. Who knows, maybe Justin Beiber logs in to make fun us, as a break from his hectic touring schedule :) (just some fun)

I worked for Med-Scribe(NJ) back in the 80s into early 90s when it was small, then had my own accounts in ortho, plastic surgery, oncology, and surgery center work until 2001-ish, when big MTSOs were becoming popular; some offices didn't want to use them. Then I worked for a small MTSO locally, which did overflow for a hospital. The owner never advertised on this forum but found people by networking. The hospital just went with a big MTSO. I'm working during the transition but not under the normal MTSO pay scale (7 cpl)nor on their Enterprise but getting close to $2/report because they needed the help and we refused to work at their rate. This job will end when they go online. I did a mailing of free-standing DI centers and large group practices and have already received requests for interviews. They don't want to deal with MTSOs (seems like it's coming full-circle). There are jobs besides what shows up here. No one is ridiculing those who aren't doing well either, btw.
