So it occurred to me... - MT

Posted: Sep 18, 2013

So I was going to apply for one of the jobs on the Job Seeker Board...it's one of the bigger companies, which I usually try to stay away from, but it's the specialty in which I'm really good at, so I said what the heck, I'll give it a try.  So as I'm fixing my resume to send it in, it occurs to me that this is how these big companies get the names of the little companies to swallow up whole.  So I decided not to apply.  People complain all the time about not getting call backs or how their company is constantly advertising when there is no work and it occurs to me again that I'll bet this is their ploy to get names of hospitals and clinics to gobble up and then send the work overseas!  It's a little suspicious how you keep hearing about how they buy this hospital and that hospital and hundreds of MTs are without jobs, yet those people who do get hired for these places have NJA constantly, get docked to part-time because they can't meet their line count, etc.  How is it that these hospitals have enough work to keep a whole transcription department busy, but then they get bought out, and yet there are still many MTs who have absolutely no work?!  It has to be that as hundreds of MTs are applying for these companies, which require YEARS of experience, they are using your resumes as their scouting tools to get more business that they turn around and send overseas to make tons and tons of money.  MTs talk about how we should stage a walk out or what have you to show these companies "we aren't going to take it," but what we should do is boycott the nationals and do not apply there for jobs when they are the ones stealing away all the work.

Occurred to me - What I do

I never thought of that, but I fill out as much as I can and state my experience. I put resume' etc., upon demand. That way if I am contacted and they want to test me or interview me, I will comply, otherwise nothing from me. I have not looked for anything for a couple of years now as I have a pretty decent part time job and it feels great. Don't make a whole lot of money, but none of these companies pay and from what I read here, I do better than most, but if I ever see anything that interests me I do my routine. Be wary of what they are advertising for. I feel for that with Medquist and was hired and didn't a blinking thing they told me I would. It was horrible. Talk about no money. I quit that place but quick!

A more realistic explanation - sm

No, the big MTSOs are not scouting out accounts to steal. They don't need to do that. Hospitals seek them out because the total transcription cost is lower AND because they are ready to start implementing front-end SR.

Yes, the MTSO takes on the MTs who used to do the account at the hospital. However, they are only needed for a while. As soon as the SR gets trained for those dictators, the SR is doing most of the work. There is no more work to be transcribed by hand, and there is then an overabundance of MTs. The MTSO is not concerned that the individual MTs are sitting without work. He is only concerned that the work he does have is snatched up and completed instantly, so having the MTs sitting without work serves his ends.

I think that is partially true, but I've seen where - Realist

MTSOs do buy out the smaller companies. That's been true with countless tiny transcription businesses, such as two I've worked for. They were purchased by one of the larger ones, and then the work was apparently shipped to India.

Of course they are... - MT

Of course they are scouting out accounts to steal. All the nationals are competing against each other and the more work they have and the more money they make the better. Most hospitals are approached by them and promised the world. Why do you think transcription has gone downhill so fast just in the last few years since these companies came about? It certainly isn't because every hospital is thinking about outsourcing their department...it's because they are contacted about how easy it would be for them to transition and save money. It's just like any other business looking for customers and beating out the competitor.

We have perfectly good, knowledgeable, qualified, and reliable MTs leaving this profession due to low pay, unreasonable expectations, unbearable platforms, and dictators who are not held to the same standards as the MT trying to transcribe their garbage into a professional legal medical document.  It really is a shame. I am not saying that we have a separate board regarding production, pay, platforms, etc., as I think that is what the Company Board is supposed to accomplish.  ...
