Please celebrate with me! - DeeDee

Posted: Feb 01, 2015

I just packed up my computer to send back to my ex MTSO!  I have a job doing transcription twice a week and doing medical assisting the other days! I'm working Monday through Friday!  I have holidays off and all the bennies!

No more nit-picking QA.

No more of my emails not being answered.

No more no appreciation and no raises!

No more ridiculous expectations to meet!

No more waiting for work!  I get paid by the hour!

No more weekends!

No more being lied on!

No more being ridiculed and spoken to like a dog or something on the bottom of a shoe!

No more working on holidays!  The clinic is closed on holidays, or at least my department is!  When the doctors aren't working and seeing patients, I don't work!

No more losing accounts!

No more up and down paychecks, steady income, sure amount!

I am taking classes to finish my bacherlor's degree, taking classes in the afternoon after work, because I don't have to sit in the front the computer waiting for work!

I have time now for my family!

Despite what my manger said about me being too old to find another job, start a new career, I'm doing it and will have a position at my clinic when I finish my bacherlor's degree!  I'm only 44!  Its never too late!

I work 8-5, whether the patients show up or not, I still get paid hourly!

Loving my life!

To my fellow transcriptionist, NEVER GIVE UP!

Congrats! - I am celebrating with you

but I have one question: How old is the manager who told you that you were too old to start another career?!? How ludicrous!! 44 is a spring chicken! Happy for you!

I'm not sure how old she is, but she sounded like she was about my age, maybe a little younger. But she hated and was out to get me from the beginning......... My family said they would have told her off, but why waste energy over that?! I know who I am and that I am a dedicated employee, but this place just beat all of that out of me. It was definitely time for me to move on, actually is way past time for me to move on.
Good luck to you! Please do not give up! :)

Awesome...jealous, but very HAPPY for you - sm

Assume you searched private docs offices till you found a job? I'm looking now, but honestly keep coming up empty. But, at least while I am looking I have a job, even if I do hate it..

I understand how you feel! I wish the same for you and all my fellow transcriptionists.

Really to be honest, I stumbled upon this job in my local newspaper and actually almost didn't apply..........Its a local clinic that does limited transcription and they wanted someone who was a transcriptionist and a medical assistant..........I fit the bill! I am so happy and blessed! The clinic see adults and children with mental and/or substance abuse problems. I am just blessed because I had lost the drive and will to sit in front of my computer day after day worrying all the time, about you know all the things we transcriptionists worry about!

Hey! congratulations DeeDee! that's great! must be going around. I just got a job offer yesterday......from my chiropractor! She asked why I was so tense, I explained to her how our jobs used to be great, but the working conditions have become deplorable. She called me a few days later and offered me a job with her! I'm taking it. I hope you're really happy at your new place! cheers!

Whooo, whoo, I love hearing stories of former MTs finding something more stable and better! CONGRATULATIONS! I am majoring in health services administration, minoring in sport psychology!

Again congrats! Much success to you!

Congrats! sm - me

What is your Bachelor's degree going to be in? Good for you for getting out of MT. I'm in school to get out. :)

Well what do you know, a happy ending for once. So glad for you.

My goodness, I wish I was 44 again. That is young.

Glad you got away from her. Sounds like she likes to pick on people and make them feel low. This probably makes her feel good about herself doing that.

Again, so glad for you. Nice to hear a happy story.

Thank you so much! I wish the best for you! I don't know what kind of person she is, just seemed like she hated me......but its all good! If my former boss taught me one thing, its what kind of supervisor/manager/person I DON'T want to be!

You have already started this job, how long - have you been there?

[ In Reply To ..]
It seems like a dream job with the no this and no that. How long have you been there to be able to find all this out? Clue others in because when we take a job we have no clue as to being lied to, appreciation coming, expectations and emails not being answered. Have you been there 6 months, a year, 3 years or just how long to be able to see how things really are? I wish I was able to stay around that long to have a decent job but now you get with a job thinking it is good and first thing I know not the case. It sounds wonderful.

Be careful what you wish for - Long Time MT_NY

Be careful what you wish for...I went back to school in 2009, found what I thought was a perfect job...until my wonderful boss left...now I have a boss who is a control freak, an executive director who is so clueless and two new managers who are too young to have been put into positions of power. Oh, and I have perfect reviews but no raise...lots of bull about why no raises but they keep promoting people to management. 20 people total in the company and 7 managers. I long to be back at home not having to deal with all this stuff.

Long to be home . . . - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
You should also be careful what you wish for! Working at home for an MTSO means dealing with extremely difficult QA that impacts your pay, and you would be averaging $9.00 to $13.00 an hour (on a good day), struggling with ESL dictators (that's all that is left on VR), and experiencing out of work on a weekly basis. I would rather have a horrible boss and know what I was going to make every week.

I don't think a med assistant would make much - IMANMT2

more than that an hour. I've been looking at the ads.

I don't know if you pay self-employment tax or not.

I say go get another job definitely but don't give your MT skills away for free because it just hurts the ones left who can't get out.

But in that case, you at least have other options - with your experience. MTs have -

pretty slim pickin's if they choose to stay in the field.

Congratulations - you're still pretty young and everything is possible for you but - OldMT

[ In Reply To ..]
what do you do if you're 64 on disability, no spouse and no significant other. Look for a recommendation for a nice cemetery plot? I am truly happy for you. I'd give anything to be 44 again.

Old MT - at least you are close to retirement - I am 51 and cannot believe

[ In Reply To ..]
that I actually WISH I were 15 years older so I could retire. Sad really.
Well at least you are old enough to have been around longer for the GOOD MT years thru the 70s/80s/90s. Ahhh, the good old days. Too bad we couldn't have seen this....I would have saved a lot more of all that money I was making. LOL.

Older, made the good money but as far as - saving a bunch?

[ In Reply To ..]
I do draw my SS and retirement check but I still work though just not as much as I had to back in the day. I did not save but I draw quite a bit on the SS end, the higher end really. I have just started a new account with my company, liking it a lot and retirement is not really on the horizon yet for me. Strange but when I was in my 50s and even 60s did not think of nor really consider retirement. This is a job that has taken me through raising kids, buying home, etc. and now with working at home just seems odd to give up something where I can make a little extra money.

How much do you make? is the same for both - IMANMT2

Your manager said that age thing about you because she is losing a good transcriptionist and she knows it. She was just trying to dissuade you from leaving. It was mean of her, but she's mean, so I wouldn't expect anything less.

I changed careers when I was 46! To medical transcription which now has become a bust--I'm 59. I left MT completely 2 years ago.

One other thing: If I worked in an office, I would never accept anything but an hourly rate for whatever transcription you do.

I did MT and front-desk in an office once. The time was divided, so I was never at the front desk while transcribing, but believe you me, there were always interruptions along with other duties while I was trying to transcribe--clerical work like possibly photocopying or faxing, answering the telephone sometimes,questions/comments directly from the docs regarding the dictations, and all sorts of things that can slow you down. I would insist on hourly for transcription, even if it's at least the same rate of pay for your other functions. If they want to pay you on production for the transcription, you may not get more than the hourly rate for your other functions. But it would still be better than working on production with interruptions.

No Such Thing - As No Office Interruptions

[ In Reply To ..]
There is no such thing as doing MT in an office without interruption. Doctor/doctors might need a resend of a prior dictation or they might want you to pull up an old dictation and add or correct a thing or two that amounts to diddly lines, but takes a lot of time to find, etc. They might need an older dictation NOW because the patient is there and he can't find the older dictation. You might have a power outage or technical issue that causes you to not transcribe. I had a patient awaiting an MRI screening come into my office because she was lonely waiting for her MRI, LOL. You never know what's going to happen in an office. I had an office manager who liked to ring my phone in my transcription area for stupid things that could have easily waited. The list goes on.

Other office personnel may call you or come into your transcription area with a question or request--or sit there and gab too long. You may have to do the leg work to get patient files if the patient files aren't electronic, etc., etc.

Hey everybody thank you so much for the encouragement! Congratulations to the poster below! I will never grow tired of hearing stories of people transitioning from the horrid of MTSOs!

My current position did compensate me well. They took into the years I transcribed, that I have my A:A degree and am a MA! So I don't want to give out my salary per hour, but let's just say I make over 35,000/year!

For the ones that were asking about how do I know this is a good company that will give raises, etc. I went to some website called glass door where current employees rate a company. During my interview, when my supervisor introduced me to everyone, I paid close attention to the interaction of the current employees. Also, I found out I have a couple of friends that have worked there for years, because they get raises and the bennies. Some of them work on weekends with differential for shifts because of the nature of the business, but some have been there 10+ years. I just lucked out that they were looking for someone to work with the physicians Mon-Fri.

For lady that was concerned about her age, I think you were 59 with a disability. I don't know the nature of your disability but you may want to try to get your CDL and drive residents in nursing homes to doctor's appointments and shopping. At least you would get hourly pay and your age in this is a plus! I've found that the nursing homes and assisted living facilities like to hire people close to the residents ages........so maybe you could do that. At least its hourly.

Well, thank you again all! I'm off to bed, going to have a busy tomorrow.

For the naysayers, all I can do is wish you well!

I'm celebrating too! - Love my MA job

[ In Reply To ..]
I was an MT for over 20 years and loved it...at first...like many of us here. Last year, at age 52, I went back to my local adult career center and took their medical assisting course. I love the fact that I can function as an LPN (with the exception of just a few duties) BUT I can also work competently in the office. I see patients with the doctor 2 to 3 days a week, and the other I am by myself in the office catching up on office work. I love the variety. I love interacting with patients. Granted, I do not make as much $ as I used to. But my schedule is regular, I have holidays off, I get paid vacations. I could go on.... In a nutshell, I'm very glad I made the move. I'm happier, calmer, and less depressed. The only drawback for me is that I can't travel and take my job with me. LOL!

You are blessed! My hospital decided to outsource transcription recently and we start with the outsource company in a month. We are all nervous and uncertain about the future. I never thought it would come to this.

Soooo happy for you!! Best wishes to you and don't ever look back! I'm going back to school, upgrading my computer skills, taking Windows Office Concepts and Applications... the computer skills that many employers are looking for... and I'm 60!

You rock! When you finish or before you finish updating your skills, hit your instructors up, sometimes employers approach instructors looking for certain skill sets and just don't bother to advertise a position formally and you can get a job that way! Keep nursing homes, assisted living facilities, nursing agencies, clinics, etc. all in mind, sometimes they are overflowed with work and will take the time to teach you their way of doing things......and with all of those facilities, your age will be a plus. (receptionist, recreational aides, CNAs, MAs, therapy aides, etc.). Use these positions as just stepping stones or if you are happy at those positions then just enjoy your life! I think the jobs are out there you just have to be persistent and flexible! I don't know why I took so long to leave at home transcription behind, boy was I dumb!

Forget full-time transcription, we deserve so MUCH MORE than MTSOs! Good luck to you!

Job change - Grandy
