IBM clicky-clack - Chris

Posted: Jul 21, 2012

Hello everyone!! Just wondering if anyone out there is a lover of the 1980's IBM clicky keyboard?  If so, I have a terrible sinking feeling the one I currently have is on its way out :(  I have already had to jerry-rig the space bar w/a piece of paper towel.

These keyboards are awesome for typing, quick, large, just incredible - and ---- they are extremely hard to find and sometimes are very expensive.  Has anyone found an alternative to this keyboard? Someone out there who is a die-hard fan of this keyboard knows what I am talking about and how desparate I am to find, HAVE TO find this keyboard or something extremely close to it.  So, any ideas??

I thank you in advance for any help or ideas you may have.  I wish you a great day!!

I always use them! - cm

I have been using this company for the past 8 years with absolutely no problems whatsoever. It is the only place I have found that has the real deal. I would be lost without mine, although I'm sure my family would prefer a quieter keyboard :)

I found I could switch to a Gateway or Dell keyboard - IAMT

from my ole IBM keyboard the easiest. I did go to a warehouse used computer place here in the Midwest that had shelves and shelves of keyboards and sat and tried quite a few before I found one similar, dug through the others and bought another for backup just in case - and paid $10 each. Think the older they are as long, as they are still functional, the better.

You're going to pay something for the type of keyboard you're looking for. I don't think there's any way around that, but you shouldn't think about it that way because it doesn't take that long for the extra cost to be paid back, and if you get a good one you'll have it for years, so it probably works out to maybe 10 cents a day or some silly number like that.

Don't take the short view - take the long view.

Be sure you get the right daskeyboard though - they have silent - models and even one with no lettering on the keys!

The daskeyboard (or "das keyboard", whichever) gets rave reviews on Amazon from people who actually type all day for a living. Two things that impressed me:

1. The key letters are engraved onto the keys; they won't fade.
2. The keyboard weighs about 3 pounds and stays put on the desk. Most of us never notice how often we have to nudge our keyboards back into position because they creep around when being used.

Yes - pricey, but I'm guessing it'll work out to more like 2 cents (extra) per day, not even the 10 cents as suggested above!
This is the one you want (non-silent, non-blank keys) - see link

I got my last one on Ebay (SM) - Keyboard Goddess

I got my last clacker on Ebay for $24.99 with $10 shipping. I can't recall the seller's name or ID, but it was an older gentleman who was a retired IT person and had a stockpile of them. He even threw in the adapters for free.

Check out Ebay and he might still have listings there. Mine was in mint condition and I love it!

Clicky keyboard - me

That's the only keyboard I can use as well. Ebay always has them, problem is most have the old hookup and the newer computers won't accept the adapter, so I found a place online that has them USB. I don't know if I am allowed to post where I got mine just 2 weeks ago, but if you email me I'll tell you. They run about 70 but worth every dime.

try a mechanical keyboard with Cherry blue switches - working on it

I love keyboards and have many, regualr and ergonomic. I have studied them and I know them like a mechanic knows a car. There are membrane switches (the cheap standard keyboards), scissor switch (like a laptop), mechanical switch (old Dell keyboards or the newer ones in which Cherry blue switch is top of the line) and the old IMB buckling spring (the most tactile keyboard in the universe).

There are several keyboard out there with Cherry blue keyswitches. They are like silk they are so responsive and have such a wonderful feel. They are tactile, clicky and FAST. I switched from an IBM because I like it better and my wrists hurt less with mechanical vs the buckling spring that that IBM has. I go faster on the blue cherries. Das keyboards have blue cherries but is expensive. Many companies make less expensive keyboards with blue cherry switches because gamers like them for their speed and accuracy so they are in demand. They are lightening fast.

The brown Cherry keyswitch is the same tactility but is silent. It makes a thud as opposed to a click. I personally like the click and most people who need the click to let the brain know a keystroke is registered prefer the blue.

If you only want to spend about 20 bucks on a keyboard then mechanical is not for you. In that case better to get a high quality membrane or scissor switch.

There are also several ten keyless mechanical keyboards which do not have the number pad and just the regular keyboard. It allows you to bring your mouse in closer so better ergonomics. They measure about 14 inches wide as opposed to the 19 inches or so or even 21 inch of the IBM. Cooler Master, Filco and Ducky make those. The Cooler Master and Filcos are of very high quality and have blue cherries. I have a Cooler Master and I love it. It is heavy weighted, excellent quality, compact and has top of the line blue cherries for about 70 bucks on Amazon. Ebay also has them about that price. I also have a full size Addesso with blue cherries which I paid about 60 dollars for. I love both of them.

My wish is for a company to finally make an ergonomic keyboard without the number pad while leaving the standard keys in place with blue cherry switches. That would be perfect.

Just Love That Clickity-clack Sound Against The Teeth

as the doctor pops a hard candy into his mouth before starting his dictation. I worked at hospital once where somebody in Medical Records thought they'd treat the doctors by putting a bowl of hard candy in the dictating room! I hope that's not the case with this current account as this is the second or third time recently that I've heard that clickity-clack and mouth swirling sound in recent days. ...
