I for one am sick and tired of this profession and what it has become with MTSOs "dictating" that an MT has to do "X number of lines per hour, either with transcribing or with VR.  There are I  believe, MANY factors that need to be taken into consideration with this  -- including the fact that they may not be the fastest typist in the world, either due to a physical disabilitiy or age, etc., however, my QA scores with the exception of Nuance have been 98-100%).  Nuance as well as another company caused me to be evicted because of the fact that "I could not meet their minimum liine requirements.  My physical health and more so, mental health suffered greatly because of this due to anxiety with trying to keep up with day-to-day living expenses, which totalled about 1200-1500 a month and that is with FINALLY getting food stamps, no car, and just paying rent and utilities.  My average checks from both companies were at or below minimum wage requirements  -- there is no more QUALITY in this profession  --- only QUANTITY and having been in the business for 30+ years aand having done QA as well, it is disgusting to me.  I have seen BLATANT mistakes made in a medical record only because an MT felt speed was more important.

Right now, I have landed a position with a company that only requires "X" lines per pay period and actually, the requirements are low.  What I have discovered however, is that a LOT of companies are no longer paying  for header information etc.  With the last company and doing on average 25-30 reports in an 8-hour period and only getting 800+ lines that is ridiculous.  I agree with some posters that factors need to be weighed in.  Difficulty of reports, dictators, sound quality etc.  I am not as strong with certian worktypes as I am with others and have ALWAYS been up front with a potential employer regarding that as well as telling them certain report types I would like to avoid, due to the fact that I may not have done that report type in many years because of the service that I worked for sent it to Radiology or had transcriptionists that handled those types of reports.

Maybe it is just me, but if a company would realize that an MT could be more productive doing "familiar/comfortable" work types, it would be profitable for both the company and MT  -- I am basically familar with ESL docs having learned on the job and having to deal with accents from day one.

Another thing that used to happen in the "good ole days" of MT is the fact that if I or another MT worked on the same account, we could communicate with one another either by IM or phone.  I had a few instances like that, where a fellow MT would be stuck, she would call me put the phone up to the computer speakers and I would "listen."  Most of the time, I was able to figure it out, but as MTs now, we no longer have that capability for fear of the fact that HEAVEN forbid we talk to each other, we badmouth the company or a person etc.

Lastly, this profession has turned into those who want to stay at home with young children, thus the "flood" of people, who for that very reason, have gotten into this profession without FULLY realizig what it entails  -- I have had several people in the past tell me "well I type 120 words per minute, I can do that work or well all you do is enter data into a computer."  Believe me, many years ago, I had people listen to snippets of dictation and when they could not understand the dictator, they quickly changed their tune as far as MT as a profession.  I am VERY much in agreement with what "Old Pro" says and those of you who complain and moan about not finding work, wanting to be an IC and set your own hours  -- fine  -- as ICs, what many people have said still holds true.  You interview, you are asked what hours you are available to work and that is the way it should be.

The service that I worked for lost a VERY large account because of the fact that it was IC status and people, who stated they would commit to so many hours on the weekend would not show up at all.  This was an MTSO who paid weekly and on time and there were possibly 4-6 of us who worked as many hours as we could to get this account within TAT.

Please also keep in mind that your circumstances could change in an INSTANT.  My S/O who helped me was diagnosed with CHF - at age 62, knowing the job market and knowing he could no longer be physically active the way he was, got terminated from his job and subsequently filed for early SS  -- at the tune of $400 a month LESS than retiring at 65.

Thursday morning, I was getting set up for "new service," after having had "gotten help I needed," thewm calling the office on Tuesday, my getting funds for back rent on Wednesday, calling the office and telling them I would be in no later than Friday.  Well, didn't happen  -- knock on the door that morning, landlord, maintenance main and 2 deputies at the door  - they threw EVERYTING in garbage bags from kitchen to bedroom etc and threw them outside the door and promptly changed the locks.  I had to deal with a moving company to move things, $380 -- storarge $124 and lodging -- el cheapo motel at $350 for a week.  Right now, I would suggest thinking about my words and saying "there but for the Grace" go I."

I for one as well, am sick of the "Pollyannas" who state, "well if it's that bad, find another job."  It isn't that easy  -- I live in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale area  -- unemployment here is 14-15%.  To find "an outside clerical job ANYWHERE, you have to be "triligual"  -- i.e. able to speak English, Spanish and Creole at least, if not more languages.

I know this is an aside, but really, I relate to this part the most. How freaking hard would it be to add a slide out to those stupid hotel tables for those of us who actually need to WORK not just check email? I've ended up with some of the most rigged positions to even try to work and it aggravates the daylights out of me.

I'm really sorry to read of your experience. Sadly, it's not just the experience of the MT field, but many fields. Do it faster, do it for less. That third leg, do it well, no longer is a factor in way to many businesses.

I disagree that it's pollyanna-ish to suggest finding work elsewhere. No it isn't easy, it isn't easy anywhere, but if an MT can carry her weight, it is doable.

Your eviction story is sadly one I'm hearing from too many people. It's time we truly take care of our own but that only leads the "haves" to scream about socialism. But IMO, country who does not work together as a country to aid its citizens is a country doomed.

I will keep you in my thoughts and hope that things get better for you and stay on the upswing. Take care.

I'm really sorry to hear you've had to go through all - that. That wages have dropped so much

[ In Reply To ..]
that people who were able to support themselves before are sliding into bankruptcy.

Thank goodness you have your computer and can still work, even at this, so you don't have to compete in your limited local job market. Hopefully this disaster has at least brought your monthly living expenses down to a place you can regroup from?

Now that it's come to this, how about setting yourself to plain old making more money? I understand and share your concern about quality work, but if you can work faster and meet the basic quality standard set by the company...do it! You have to take care of yourselves.

As for not doing all work types, the simple reality is, doing virtually all work types IS the standard these days, with many competitors meeting it. So, definitely time to fix that, right? Assuming you're not retiring and taking up golfing instead? :) Best wishes.

I'm so sorry to hear of your troubles, nn. Just wanted you to know that others have been where you are. I lived in a "residence motel" for almost a full year, working remotely for a large MTSO, struggling to save up enough money from my wages to find a permanent place to live. I looked at the situation I found myself in as positively as possible, telling myself that I FINALLY had maid service, could relax after work in the pool, and didn't have to buy cleaning supplies or toilet paper, and didn't have to pay for any utilities, not even internet access! I've been discouraged as well by the direction our beloved profession has taken. I call myself a "seasoned" and "all-around" medical language specialist and try really hard to not give away my age, cutting my experience short so as to not reveal too much information that might ultimately put my resume at the bottom of the pile. Although my experience spans more than 35 years, I cut off my resume at 10 years. In today's climate, that's all they need to know anyway as we no longer get a real advantage for our long-term experience as far as pay and benefits go. Being credentialled doesn't even carry as much weight any more as one would think it would. To me, probably the saddest of all is that I've waited years and years in excited anticipation for voice recognition to make its way into our profession only to be terribly disappointed in what that has actually translated into as far as getting paid for my expertise in medical terminology and years of experience as a medical language specialist. Don't even get me started on the insane insistence for verbatum transcription and how my very intelligence is put to test in that arena ! I've worked hard to stay abreast of not only what is and has been happening in our profession, but also to stay educated and aware and, yes, experienced in digital dictation and transcription and the use of computers and many different work platforms. When I look at my "success" financially over the past few years as I continue to try to make a living at this job that I truly do continue to love despite it all, I find that my yearly income has dropped some $12,000. Truly shocking since, for the past 7 years, I've worked for the same MTSO! To compensate, I left the Sunshine State (which, by the way, is where I was born and raised and lived for many, many years) for a state where the cost of living is significantly less, where my decreased income isn't such a calamity, and where I can actually afford to pay the rent and utilities and still have money left over for food. I still love this job, despite all the things that have been done to tear it down. I still take a great deal of pride in knowing what I know and having learned what I've learned over the years. Be well, my friend. Stay strong. Pat yourself on the back for having survived it all. Tomorrow is another day.

This post resounded within me... I think I'm at the same place as you... - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Had to leave my beloved California and move to Arizona in order to survive. Learned transcription on the job 33 years ago when I was pregnant with my oldest but never go beyond mentioning 10 years of experience on my resume. I too looked forward to VR as a wrist-saver but am so disappointed at the way it has changed this industry.

Hang in there, ladies... there are MTSOs that will pay reasonably; we just have to find them.

Therein lies the problem..... - MTSOs that is (sm)

[ In Reply To ..]
It used to be most MTSOs were ex-MTs and they understood the complexity of the job, how to train, what was reasonable to expect, etc. Unfortuantely, when big mega-company threw large sums of cash at traditional MTSOs to buy them out, the industry was left with a gulf between management and the people in the trenches. The last company I worked for hired a supervisor that came from an entirely different industry and it was thought that her skills in "managing people" were sufficient to run a group of MTs. Well, it turns out that her people managing skills were largely the function of her being somewhat of a bully. She throughout she could bully people into being competent MTs, as regards both production and quality. It is my impression that large parts of the industry are being run that way now. I know for a fact that no one with MT experience would have believed the myth VR was across the board twice as fast as straight typing. But that is just one example. There are many more but I think you old-timers (and I say that with the upmost respect) understand where I am coming from.

Are you the MT with the conyor parrots? - Watching your posts for over a year now

[ In Reply To ..]
I've been watching your posts ever since that other company locked you out because you, if I recall correctly, had to take a few hours off to find your parrot because it had gotten outdoors...Are you that same poster? Your location rings a bell with me, and I recall you've been struggling for awhile. My sympathies to you, my friend.

another 35+ yr MT - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
My heart goes out to you, yes, "but for the grace of God, there go I" comes to mind. I'm making about $10,000 less per year now than about 5-6 yr ago. Its getting harder to juggle everything, especially keeping track of the constant changes with accounts, and make enough production to stay afloat. There seems to be no respect for our knowledge anymore, just more demands and less money. I too love the work, but not the direction we're going. Just hang in there; we're hanging with you.

From another old grey mare - Been there

[ In Reply To ..]
I am so sorry that this industry had led you to such dire circumstances. Well, I am bilingual. I applied for a bilingual job and what they meant was Spanish and English, not German and English. So much for the real meaning of bilingual. Medical terminology should qualify as a second language. And, this industry gets worse all the time. They expect more and more for less and less. And having to be responsible for the client's demographics for no pay is simply time consuming and unnerving. I am tired of having to be a research diva before I can even get into the report. Could go on for hours here, but I am so sorry all this has happened to you with all your years' experience. You have my empathy and prayers.

That sad thing is, most of us old-timers - are in the same boat.

I've been looking at regular secretary work outside - of MT, and find I dont even qualify. (s/m)

[ In Reply To ..]
They seem to want total proficiency in Powerpoint, Excel, and a bunch of programs I never even heard of. Many want 10+ hour days, 6 days a week, a Bachelor's degree, 5 years of previous, recent, in-office experience, preferably as an administrative assistant, and they want to pay only $10-15/hour.

And how 'bout all the ads for on-site "medical transcriptionists" I've been seeing lately that, when you read them, also want you to be a jack-of-all trades: Certified coder, medical assistant, be able to draw blood and run samples, be a bookkeeper, receptionist, AND they want you to be able to do heavy phones and transcribe 120-150 wpm.

Is it the lady with the parrot story and TTS (sm) - Confused

[ In Reply To ..]
So, it sounds like you kind of recognize this poster, too, or know her identity. Is it indeed the same poster who about a year ago was locked out by TTS (I think it was TTS) for being off shift to try to catch her parrot? I don't remember all the details of the story, just that I felt badly for her, but then a lot of posters that followed indicated there was more to the story than the wayward bird. I'm confused...is this the same poster? Her locale is very familiar to me and she didn't answer my earlier post (maybe because a nosey-body but the scenario just sounds SO familiar).

your post - op

[ In Reply To ..]
I have never been with TTS and no my company did not lock me out because of losing my bird. My landlord had ILLEGALLY shut my power off.

This is a very sad thread. Many initially thought SR - would be paid more, requiring a higher

skill set, but no one expected this very major recession to come along and add to the new options of offshoring and complete front-end processing. A whole lot of people feel there will continue to be a need for this work, but then again, most economists expect our economy to take several more years to recover.

Until people can better afford to go to the doctor, have insurance to actually pay for those hospital admissions, half the hospitals in this country and many, many practitioners will be forced to cut their costs as much as possible.

Not a great "short"-term indicator, but the many similar stories being posted do suggest wages have dropped past a sustainable point in our industry now. It's only the large number of second-earners in our field that have made it possible for them to drop this far for so many.

BTW, I purchased a little, vertically adjustable table (for working away from home) at an office store for about $20-30. Which may be a lot of money at this point, I know, but it could save someone's back, wrists...remaining livelihood.

My fellow MTs and myself are struggling as well - Poor MT

[ In Reply To ..]
After the Spheris fiasco, several of my group of MT friends are struggling. I am 50 years old and moved for the second time this year! Things were great with Spheris and then wham... things went so downhill. I am making a third of what I made two years ago. I like the company I'm with now for the most part, don't love it, but at least it's something. I love working at home, and really do not want to find a job outside my home. I like being home with my dog and cat. I like being able to do the laundry and cook whatever I want. I'm trying my best to look on the bright side even tho it is so dark out. Things changed last week so I am hopeful that I will be able to make more money with this company soon.
I hate to hear things are so bad with so many of us. It is up to us to try to change with the times tho, however hard it is. I think all the time that it's time to reinvent myself but have yet to do it! I'm hoping that now that I have a room-mate that I can actually afford to live my life again. Never thought I'd have a room-mate at my age but I gotta do what I gotta do.
I do wish you and the rest of us the best! We deserve it!

The future job - Alice

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm seriously considering finding a job somehow in alternative medicine. I'm thinking that many people are starting to think for themselves and looking into the industry of wellness, as in nutritional therapies, as an alternative to being sick and depending on traditional medicine. So, I'm wondering if there is actually a future in earning a living as a nutritional counselor or something like that. After all, the baby boomers are getting older and maybe they are getting wiser and learning to think for themselves as a group rather than depend on what doctors have to say regarding their healthcare. Just a thought.

A talented person can sell expertise, sure, but many - would find a niche in fringe medine

[ In Reply To ..]
hard to cling to, especially in these hard times when most people are trying to avoid running up medical bills at all, too many others only ready to seek alternative care when they're economically broken by mainstream medicine.

I have no thoughts on how much greater wisdom and independence might create demand but do strongly suspect it'd be best to offer a service mainstream enough that insurance would pay your fees. Or, head directly for upper-scale neighborhoods for a clientele who can pay for what they want. Or plan to accept plenty of them chickens in payment. :)

At least you are thinking about a direction, though. Good luck.
Alternative "medicine" - Alice
[ In Reply To ..]
Thank you for your feedback. I wasn't referring to anything that would ever be qualified as needing an office or insurance reimbursement, though. I'm talking totally alternative, like wellness, nutrition, not MD-based. It truly does not take a medical degree to provide people with alternatives in wellness care, IMHO. The main obstacle, though, is to overcome the brainwashing that has been imposed upon the public that has learned to depend 100% on pharmaceuticals. Don't get me wrong. I believe that pharmaceutical-based medicine has its place, but not to be the only source of maintaining health and wellness.
I pretty much assumed that, but you do have to make a - living to be able to help. Hope you do great. NM

to these posts. I've been doing this for so long now and even with my kids grown and out of the house, my husband and I have less and less money. I just can't do it anymore. We can longer afford anything and I'm tired of feeling guilty about not doing my share. I'm getting out. Just got hired as a "medical secretary" in a path lab with benefits and paid vacation. I'm nervous as heck but it's time!! It's not going to get any better.

Good for you!! Congrats! - poor MT

sounds like a great job.. I used to work as a secretary for a large medical school and enjoyed it. I just don't want the drama of an office with women in it anymore, not at my age. something in a coffee shop tho sounds more up my alley!
