has anyone made the successful transition to coding/billing - from transcription?

Posted: Sep 07, 2013

I'm thinking about getting certified in this area. Mostly considering coding as that has the smallest contact with patients and I get to work independently. I had some schooling about 20 years ago for coding, have been a transcriptionist 16 years, plus QA specialist and editor. I just want short-term schooling. I have hesitated going into this field because I am afraid it will go overseas, and that no one will give new hires a chance. I know one gal who went to school for it and gave up finding a job (though she had no medical records experiences at all). So my question, has anyone made a successful transition to medical billing and or coding, and is gainfully employed? How hard was it entering the field? Did they take your years as a transcriptionist and medical language professional into consideration? Any interning options available? Thank you for any replies!

I did, and here is something to consider - SM

Coding is the conversion of medical information into alphanumerical codes that describe diseases, signs, symptoms, health states, reasons for encounters with medical personnel, and treatments provided. This information is used for statistical purposes in healthcare, for quality assurance, public health, disease control, research, monitoring (cancer and other disease registries, for example), and SOME of it is used for reimbursement, without which the provision of medical care would be impossible.

Some professionals in this field have very little involvement with anything even resembling the collection of money from patients. They may be involved with the other aspects of coded data like research and data analysis, or they might even work for organizations that don't bill patients, like public health departments, charities, international aid organizations, and the Department of Defense/Veterans Affairs.

They might work as professional bill reviewers who help uninsured and underinsured patients, Medicare recipients, and victims of catastrophic diseases and accidents by sorting out charges, insisting on the removal of inappropriate charges, and negotiating reductions and payment plans.

They might even work as auditors who review bills and the evidence supporting them in order to detect error and fraud, recoup payments, and prosecute criminal physicians and healthcare entities.

How, exactly, is that going to go overseas?

Question about MT experience - Not sure what you mean

You asked if employers took my years of experience as an MT into consideration.

A couple of questions for you that might help you see how the MT fits in and how you might approach using it to your advantage.

What about MT do you feel employers ought to consider?

How are they going to know what that is?

What do you plan to omit from your training because of the MT?

Are you basing that on coding classes from 20 years ago or on something more current (and not academic)?

These are questions that will occur to prospective employers, not just me.

Transition - MT headed

Medical transcription and coding are 2 entirely different things. Employers do not think that because you can transcribe, you can code, it just doesn't work that way. If you studied A & P, that will help. Being a QA specialist and editor might help as you are probably good at gleaning information from patient records. Schooling for coding 20 years ago is not going to be relevant.

Internships do exist, but not as many as before due to HIPAA/confidentiality rules. You could try and find a job as a medical records clerk or something in billing while you are going to school and try to learn on the job. Once you are established with an employer, it is going to be easier. I would not be concerned about coding going overseas. It is going to be difficult getting your first job, but it is done. Getting a first job in anything is going to be difficult and there is a lot of competition. At my facility, even temp positions in medical records or insurance/billing get hundreds of applicants. I transitioned from transcription to medical records. I have coding education and certification but no experience. I do not code but am involved with the electronic health record in other areas, I am gainfully employed. Having knowledge of coding may open up other opportunities for you as well.

Hired For Coding/billing/transcription, But Told No Coding
Aug 13, 2013

Accepted a job, gave 2 weeks notice, and yesterday was my first day.  I was to be helping out transcription (1000 jobs behind), and then sitting with billing and training with coding as their coder will be out on maternity leave in December.  The office is adding another surgeon, and they are rapidly expanding.  So I gave a proper 2 weeks' notice to my former employer (2 hours on the road there and back, low salary - now less than half distance and $3 more an hour) and starte ...

I'm thinking of making the jump after years (22+) in MT and LT and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on the best way to go about doing this.  I have found a couple of prep courses for the CCP exam, but it would be nice if I could hear some actual experiences that people have had with some of the actual courses out there.  It would be great if you could provide links to the places that y'all have gone to.  Feel free to e-mail me if you'd prefer.  Tha ...

Transition From MT To Coding
Sep 19, 2013

A question for anyone. Would you enroll in a community college program for medical coding at 57 knowing it would cost 5 grand to complete the course, and also with the knowledge that there are very few if any entry-level positions available in coding on the west coast. I see positions for in-house MT's and coders alike in other parts of the country all the time, but not so much on the west coast. I'm torn about this question, whether the commitment required would be worth it as I ...

Billing And Coding
Apr 11, 2011

I have a stupid question.  When I finished my MT course with Allied Medical School, I then found out they are NOT (federally) accredited, they do not assist you in finding positions, and they do not assist in helping you become certified.  In other words, I felt that I wasted all of that money.  As a newbe I was unable to find a job.  I started apprenticing with a company, paid their $500 fee for software, and after 8-9 months, found they had changed their name.  Apparently, they were getti ...

I have been an MT for 20+ years and now looking into coding and billing... Would you recommend it? I am considering this, but looking for some words of wisdom prior to making a decision. I see Career Step offers the program, but not familiar enough with Career Step to know if they are a reputable. Billing And Coding With MT Background
Jun 15, 2010

I have a background in medical transcription however I am unable to sit in the same position (foot pedal - headset - typing) for any length of time.  I broke my neck many years ago and didn't know when I was in school that this was going to prevent me from doing this career on even a part time basis and after graduating with high honors and having great employee/employer relationships. Best Job Prospects? Billing Or Coding?
May 29, 2014

As a starving MT, I am going to take the plunge through AAPC to enroll either in their coding or billing program.  I cannot afford both.  Actually, I cannot afford either, but I feel I have to invest in the future away from MT.  I've read the forums at AAPC, and some are saying there are too many credentialed coders and not enough jobs.  I do not know what the job impact will be, if any, once ICD-10 is implemented, if it is implemented, and the need for more coders.  ...

Future In Medical Coding / Billing
Feb 08, 2012

I have a question about coding and billing.  For three years in the '90s, I coded and transcribed for a small, rural, hospital.  I was responsible for outpatient, ER, inpatient, surgical etc. coding and transcription.  It was mostly ICD-9, and HCPC coding.  If I want to code from home in the future, what would you suggest I do, an online program?  Do you think coding from home would be an opportunity or do most hospitals/clinics/physicians require experience at a facility first, and wo ...
