Everyone working on the BeyondTXT platform with Transcend just received an email from our editing trainer explaining to us how VR software only has to be 75% correct and we have to fix it to be perfect as if we were typing it. She even specifies that if grammar is incorrect, sentences don't make sense, etc, we must fix it to quality standard. While I agree with all that, what i don't agree with is the fact that they have put all of us (on Swedish at least) on all VR with mostly ESL dictators. For the amount of work required to fix some of these reports, the 4 cpl they pay is a slap in the face! I am so angry right now it's not even funny. I usually edit at a rate of 390-405 lines per hour (way higher than the industry standard of 250 lines per hour), but when I am basically retyping reports because they are so bad (usually due to ESL not speaking proper English), I find it insulting that they want me to do it for 50% less than the typing rate. Now that they have completely gotten rid of blank lines, I have taken a 30% paycut. Please if you feel like responding, don't talk to me about my production rate because I am one of the highest. I am insulted that we have to know so much and get paid what high schoolers get paid to work in fast food. Sorry this is so long and wordy, but I figured better to vent on here than go off on some people at Transcend and lose my job (since having my minimum wage coming in is certainly better than no wage, especially in this economy). Anyone else working for Transcend as frustated as me?

It's a very UNFAIR ramification of VR that the less work you have to do, the more you make; and the more work you do, the less you make. Last night I was breaking my fingers to edit reports for a doctor that VR could not handle. For all my trouble, I got way less money than my average. This situation should be corrected, and I actually think it will be; MTSOs do have room for our opinions, and many of them want to do (at least somewhat) right by us. Software can track changes in a document, and MTSOs could easily adjust line rates for lines that have had a lot of editing. It would be less complicated just to get feedback and decide, "Dr. Smith takes a lot longer to edit than Dr. Jones, so we will pay 1 cpl more for Dr. Smith's reports." What would persuade MTSOs to do that? Surely they can't think that all VR reports are a breeze. I emailed a former manager with paragraphs from an actual report before editing, and she took that physician off VR. Apparently she had no idea what we were dealing with on that guy's reports. It is not in the MTSO's interests for us to be bogged down with VR.

I agree with you completely. Just a penny more in pay would certainly make a difference, but Transcend does not give raises unless you promote to QA or higher. I will just have to put in more hours and just deal with the sorry pay. I need this job and working at home is awesome. Just wish we were paid for what we do and know. We were told that when/if our accounts transferred to BeyondTxt, that we would make 60% of our basic wage. With that calculation based on a just a simple number for simplicity, say you make 0.10 per line - lol, so your pay would be reduced to 0.06 per line - that was my understanding. Now I see the rate is only 0.04 per line????? Bamboozled or what??

I don't think I could make minimun wage at that low rate, especially with the work involved. Wow!

next week or so, and I am hoping her training this time is at least 50% better than last time, and I am not even asking for 75%. She is terrible. She throws a lot of fancy words out here but we all know it is just hot air. Maybe she should go back to working in the trenches or even better, washing dishes at a local slop house.

Yeah, I'm not taking another training course. I am doing all right with the editing. It's just those ESL (especially Dr. Xie) that take way too long to get done because they require so much fixing. Dr. Zanetti is also just as bad and his English is fine. It's the editor that doesn't understand him for some reason. The 4 cpl is what is insulting. No one can make a real living off that kind of pay.

to hear that your accounts, at least, are going back to a "transcription quality" product. My current accounts have that standard too. The only verbatim account I ever had was at Transcend, but there and here was a long period of instructions on how not to "over edit," producing those sloppy-utilitarian (apparently not enough) reports. I'm taking this as an encouraging sign for the future...

In any case, I also totally agree with the obvious--4 cents a line is very inadequate pay for any report that isn't already to, what, 85%+ ? when it comes to you. I do the kind of editing work you seem to be describing and make more than a cent-and-a-half more because of the very extensive corrections required. At that, this is a recent rate decrease that came with a new platform, and I'm still trying to improve to my previous earnings. (Since I previously used macros to perform many of the new functions built into the platform, I'm not seeing much of the benefit that's supposed to offset the pay cut.) Straight transcription didn't get the rate cut, so I've gone back to doing more of that.

Hope you guys get this worked out.

I understand that everything is going to the way of the editor and not typing, but when the editor keeps missing whole sentences or makes up words that sound nothing like the doctor is saying, how is one supposed to make any money? I only get paid .04 per line to edit and I am spening more time trying to fix editing mistakes than I would if I just erase the text and type it out. Very frustrating. I work for a company that uses M*Modal for VR and all the reports have SO much editing. There are complete words missing, words added that clearly aren't being dictated, at least 2 words on each line that have to be edited. I'm doing so much more work for less pay than I was straight typing everything. This is the only editing I've done so I don't know if this is normal for editing or if M*Modal just sucks! So, last week the system went down right as I was finishing up an extremely long job. When it finally came back up, there was another glitch and before I could hit "recover", the job sent to the hospital as I originally got it with no editing whatsoever! I am new to Escript, as well as VR editing. I find it to be VERY time consuming and crappy pay at $0.04. That being said, I am lucky to make $10 an hour, if that. In addition, you have to be on your toes, as it seems like at least one word in a sentence is incorrect. For example today, one report stated, "testis Cardiolite stress test." I work with the eScription platform and I have no problem with editing - I really enjoy giving my fingers and wrists a break, but I have the worst time concentrating when I'm doing it, LOL. I can fly through reports when I'm focused. My line counts are great for an hour and then drop off...pick back up...then drop off again. When they say VR editing is 4 cents a line, do they mean payment just for the specific lines that are edited, or for the whole report? For instance, if a report is 40 lines long, but 5 lines need to be changed, do you get paid for the entire report, or just those 5 lines? ...

Just wandering if there are any employee positions that aren't just editing out there. I feel like I am not growing as an MT doing nothing but editing. Unless I choose to just edit and accept this is the new norm at 3 cents a line, eventually getting my own voice recognition software for the future for any accounts I want to get on my own. Any thoughts? I am wandering if this is something I just need to hop onboard for. Editing for nationals doesn't pay anything ...

After 15 years in MT, I really don't see a bright future in it any more. With VR, etc., I just don't see a way to make a living doing this anymore. Wondering what kinds of other fields may be good to consider. I know this is not the ideal time to be looking for a job. Thinking of going to nursing school first to become an LPN. Hey guys I was just mulling over the fact that editing accrues 1/2 that of transcribing, yet it tends to be as difficult if not moreso depending on the butchering job it does to the dictation (heavens forbid they have a thick accent. then it truly only stands in the way of progress...)... both I & my mother are MTs & just kind of wondering- does anyone else think this is fair?
