Anybody living in Hawaii that works for one of the national companies?  Pondering a move and am curious about my options.  Thanks.

I live in Hawaii and work as an IC for a couple different national companies on the mainland. If you are an IC, it is better to work with mainland companies. If you do IC work with a local company/clinic, you will get hit with an extra 4% GET tax on top of your self-employment taxes. As for employee positions, I have found many do not hire in Hawaii. Not sure if that is because of the time and expense in shipping equipment or because of our labor laws, specifically having to provide medical insurance to any employee working 20+ hours.

The Kaiser clinic and hospital on Maui outsources their transcription to the Philippines! I expressed my disappointment with that while I was there 2 years ago, but it seemed like the doctors themselves didn't have much control over it. Don't know if that helps, but maybe it'll keep you from wasting too much time with local clinics/hospitals. Best wishes.

There are other local hospitals. - sm

The hospital near me is currently hiring MTs. However, the pay is low. I make considerably more as an IC working for a mainland company. Even though our cost of living here is higher, jobs typically pay less on the islands than they would on the mainland.

Hawaii Trip For Nuance India
Nov 30, 2013

Just wanted to let everyone know that I heard from a friend who works for Nuance that Nuance sent their whole India division to Hawaii for Thanksgiving.  Isn't that nice, NOT!! The America contigent gets nothing, 0, zip, nada.  I also work for Nuance and am so saddened by this.  We also work very hard in America.  It is very frustrating to be so ignored and undervalued. ...
