Direct deposit is not free to employers. It’s cheaper than check processing, but there are setup fees, and some banks charge a per transaction fee. If the company is offshore, maybe it costs them more to do DD. I don’t think the employees should have to pay this, though. Pay Pal and the other services charge fees, so it does make sense.
