There are many medical facilities that contract with larger companies for coding, but I have not heard of an individual "going out on their own." You could start small and contact some offices in your area to see if you can pick up some accounts and go from there; be prepared with a proposal because you need to tell potential clients how much you charge. You wlll probably need to hire additional staff to stay within turnaround times, and there will be start up costs related to software and computer equipment. You could also work as a consultant and go on site from place to place. How much is "a ton" of experience, and what certifications do you have?
