Adventures in Moving - A lot depends on your area

You didn’t say whether you were moving across town or cross country. It’s been several years, but I’ve moved alone in the past. What I did was to do my own packing and hire a moving and storage company for the heavy stuff. If it was a local move, I would take as much as I could in the car, i.e., dresser drawers, clothes from the closet, pretty much anything I could carry that would fit. I took my computer and other electronics, plants, etc. myself. Professional movers work fast, and a move that would take inexperienced people all day takes them a couple of hours. It’s more expensive to do it that way, but they’re insured and if someone gets hurt you are not going to get sued. They also do things like setting up your bed. I live in the western US in a fairly rural area so they probably charge differently, but some will charge by the hour, some will estimate by weight. For me, it has been worth it to use the professionals. If you have friends who are willing to help you, that is another way to go, but you will need to rent a truck (U-Haul, etc.) and probably pay your friends. I would suggest calling a few places and getting some estimates. Good luck.
