I hear this often and would type feels. To me, pain and discomfort (other examples are numbness and tingling, nausea and vomiting) are kind of like one singular combination of more than one but similar symptoms.
Also, I read this as the doctor saying the "left lower back" feels better rather than pain and discomfort feel better. But that's just how I do it.
