What was Kyle doing there in the first place - Multifaceted issue

If Kyle were so sweet and innocent, he would not have been at a protest against police brutality and he would not have been carrying a weapon. Why was he being chased? Maybe he said something to his attackers to provoke them. It seems odd that he was singled out in a crowd if there had not been some kind of exchange. Self defense or not, he killed 2 people and he’s now the media darling, walking around, probably still carrying a gun, and free to do it again. I didn’t watch the trial, but 2 wrongs don’t make a right.
