"Devastation" - Liz

Posted: Aug 7th, 2020 - 11:21 am In Reply to: It's not a virus that's - caused "devastation"

Dealing with a novel virus is an evolving prospect. Scientists can only tell us what they think based on what they have studied in the past and use that information to try to predict what's going to happen with a new virus. They can also only try to predict what will happen based on various decision scenarios presented to them. Because the virus is new, they can only continue to research it and adjust their recommendations on what they find. A perfect example of this procedure is what happened when AIDS reared its ugly head. It took years to get it under control enough so massive deaths stopped. No scientist would do anything more than play out various options for the President and his team, and I believe that is what they did. The recommendations change as the data evolve and update. I've known about Dr. Fauci for 30+ years. He, as do most researchers at the National Institutes of Health, has an outstanding reputation for the work he's done, including the historic work on the AIDS virus. He himself has admitted mistakes made in trying to manage COVID-19 and has had the courage to correct them. He may be alone in that. There just are no absolute when something like COVID-19 comes into our lives.

I, for one, haven't been "scared into mindless compliance" over this. For quite a few of the mandates my response is "Where's the harm in complying?" For the others I mourn that there will be a lot of damage, particularly to small business, but it seems not as much damage as what will be caused by not complying as we are seeing. It doesn't do much good to worry about losing your business if you end up dying.

What it comes down to for me is the upside of managing this virus is prolonged and uncertain and the downside is disaster. I don't want to get sick or die and I don't want to make anybody else sick or die. I've tried to help businesses hurt severely by shutdown by using them more than I ordinarily would and giving them a little extra in the process. I support the bills Congress passed and the HEROS act awaiting McConnell's grace. I will do anything else I can within my limited means.

So for me it's not a matter of being scard, it's a matter of simple common sense. It doesn't take much bravery to wear a mask and wash your hands - even if it doesn't do anything to help. The point is it might.
