Network, network, network. Join Linked In if you're not and any coding organizations in the area. If your local hospital and clinics have in-house coding try to meet them. For me I got extremely lucky because a very good friend of mine for 30 years who happens to be a HIM (we were friends from a singles group before that) told me to get my coding certification and specific areas to get and she'd make sure I got hired because she knew my ethics. Sure enough, the day I obtained my certification she had me officially apply to HR and she called them and said "hire her, I know her and want her. Forget she doesn't have the experience requirement, I will work with her."
