What are your goals for pay? - sm Posted: Dec 4th, 2019 - 2:45 pm In Reply to: Aspiring MT Seeking Advice - Hix
The pay ranges varies greatly but on the norm is under $30K a year now. You're paid by the line or audio minutes, not hourly or salary.
Most hospitals and clinics outsource work to big companies that yet again outsource to smaller companies or offshore the work. You don't get benefits with most companies now and work as an independent contractor.
As an IC, you have to pay your own taxes, provide your own benefits, and have no security when you lose an account (which can be frequent).
You do not always have full-time work as work can run out frequently around every single holiday for weeks sometimes. You will always share your accounts with other ICs and pull from a pool of work.
MT doing straight typing is becoming obsolete due to voice recognization, and, most especially, artificial intelligence where not even a voice rec editor will be needed.
Even voice rec editing will be obsolete soon too due to AI - or even better point and click electronic medical systems, which have eliminated thousands of MT jobs over the past decade.
