My HDSM started taking PTO 6 months ago at a frequency of about every 2 to 3 weeks for several days at a time.
They definitely know what's coming and are probably preparing to either leave or be let go. It's better to take as much PTO as possible before leaving, otherwise any balance left will be paid out at a much, much higher tax rate. So, I suspect this is why some of them have been taking a lot more days off than usual.
The HDSM asking for volunteers to go part time - all I can say is at least it's been offered, if the alternative is being let go, but doubt that's going to be what those of us who need a full-time income will be able to do...I don't know - I wonder what everyone else thinks about this...
