Personally, I would have changed it to cessation, as was your original inkling. Can't tell you the number of times I've heard the pronunciation of the word cessation horribly butchered over the years, especially from the ESL dictators, but gum, patches, hypnosis are all forms of smoking cessation aids, so "cessation" makes sense in this case. :)
