When I said "since the advent of PCs," I meant since the first years of PC use, meaning I believe there was more space figured in after a period at first than there is now, if that makes sense.

And BTW, the profession of typesetting (also once a well-paid specialty) was destroyed by the digital age as well, so this is the second time I've been through that. Except in that case it happened practically overnight. There are still a few professional typesetters around (people who tweak digital fonts for aesthetics and readability), but not many.
