Years ago -- we're talking about 15 or 20 years ago -- I worked as a traveling MT. It was a great gig, and I got to see parts of the country I had never seen before. The only downside was that the clients who were willing to pay all that expense (hotel, etc.) had funky systems -- hence their desire for in-house workers.
Those jobs are few and far between now, for obvious reasons (more standardized technology, remote transcribing, etc.).
