In the case of "in lieu of," your brain would make it correct IF you had to type it verbatim. And that is why our brain thinks that "the wound is well healed" is correct which I still maintain is a clumsy sentence that is worded incorrectly. But we are not allowed to change it to the correct form of "the wound has healed well."
