You merge with MMOdal like you merge with a flesh-eating bacteria. They approach, you resist, they come closer, you are eventually "merged" with them in the sense of overwhelmed, devoured, subsumed. I think merging is something equals would do, not gobbling up like MModal does. Yummm.
