Giving your name - Not against HIPAA

Posted: Nov 23rd, 2017 - 1:03 pm In Reply to: Where I Worked - see msg

If all you are providing is your name, that is not against HIPAA. If you have to shout out your SSN, DOB, phone number or other personal info, that is a problem. Most reception staffs should be trained to know what to keep private. At a doctor's office, no one in the waiting room is listening anyway, most people don't feel well enough to care and your name isn't a secret. Networking among others in your facility also is not a breach, but people looking up your chart without your authorization is grounds for termination. That is where the compliance officer and the confidentiality pledges come into play. Looking up records if it is in the course of one's work and necessary to perform the job is not a breach. If you think someone in your group is accessing your records without permission, you need to report that. Just because someone has access to your PHI, it does not mean they are snooping.
