Where I work, I know of nurses and others who were terminated for breaches, one MT I work with was let go because she was overheard at a picnic by someone on the administrative team discussing someone she had done transcription on. We go through annual training and sign a confidentiality pledge every year. I can only speak for my employer, but our compliance officer takes HIPAA very seriously. Employers who don't are subject to fines. I'm actually surprised at your experience, it sounds as if someone isn't doing their job.
