They are breaking the law having you work IC in the situation you describe. But these companies are getting away with it because THEY CAN. As an IC, YOU are your own boss and YOU decide when YOU can work. Otherwise, it's employee and they have to pay you minimum wage at least, which I still wouldn't work for, not doing this crap. Glad you got out of that quickly.
