Depending on your state, you don't need an attorney to file. It's nicer and easier but it's not required. I filed last spring. Cost me $1500. BUT once you file, your payments for many things stop so you actually save a little. This guy doesn't sound like he wanted to be bothered. Filing yourself would cost you around $650 I believe.
