comma before status post? - cjsi

Posted: Aug 10, 2012

He has hydrocephalus, status post VP shunt.  Is it correct to put a comma before status post or best to leave it out?  As I work longer, I realize I need to brush up on my grammar.  Thanks for the help.

status post - tmt

If the patient developed hydrocephalus as a result of the VP shunt, then no comma.

If the patient developed hydrcephalus and then had a VP shunt as treatment, then yes to the comma.

The patient has a history of a left humerus fracture status post a fall.

The patient has a history of a left humerus fracture, status post ORIF.

status post with or without comma - jds

If I might chime in here...
a good rule to remember when dealing with status post and commas is this:
Think of the status post with a commas as referering to the status as 'then, now' or 'then versus now.'
ie, the patient had hydrocephalus, but now he has a shunt in.
Otherwise, without the comma, you are saying that due to the shunt being put in, he now has hydrocephalus.
Make sense? I hope this helps.

Question On Post Vs Status Post
Oct 22, 2009

Sometimes I'm not sure what to do when they say "post" ... something. I know if it is postauricular (for example), it is attached ... but how about post aneurysmal surgery?  It does not seem like it would be attached.  - Is it proper to leave it stand-alone or should I change it to status post ... or actually attach it? Thanks in advance!!  ...
