Wound V.A.C. or wound VAC - MacMom

Posted: Jul 05, 2013

I have typed it like this for years and years (Wound V.A.C.) and while reviewing my "editor reviews" from a new account yesterday noted that Wound V.A.C. had been changed to wound VAC througout the report.  I have sent an e-mail requesting clarification from them but wanted to take a poll here also.  Thank you!

Would you transcribe GERD as G.E.R.D., or COPD as C.O.P.D., or AIDS as A.I.D.S., or PT/INR as P.T./I.N.R.?

If not, then V.A.C. should be transcribed VAC.

V.A.C. versus VAC - MacMom

Thank you. That is actually a pretty great way to explain it. :)

You're very welcome! Glad I could help. - Des

V.A.C. is actually a brand name. That's why a lot of us - type(d) it that way

Stedman's has it as VAC, which I suppose can also be a generic acronym for vacuum-assisted closure device.

My QA also corrected my V.A.C. to VAC, citing Stedman's, and probably correct unless the doctor is referring to the specific brand name device, and I guess that wouldn't be too easy to determine. :-)

VAC is also a chemo combo, but given the completely different contexts they'd be used, there wouldn't be any confusion in the meaning to merit using V.A.C. to distinguish the two.

...just my 2 cents...

I use VAC, because - V.A.C is brand name, and...

...we don't know if the surgeon actually used the brand name. It is always "safer" to not assume a brand name, so if you get corrected to V.A.C., tell them that---you did not know if dictator was using the V.A.C. brand name. They would be hard-pressed to argue with that. However, if you are instructed in a blanket manner to always put the periods, then that's what you have to do.

I have always been told that either is correct. Nobody ever counted points against which preference I wanted to make in the past, but if its the N company who is the culprit, I would assume they make up their own rules as they go along or the QC has the power to veto for or against, which is completely ridiculous. There again, designed to make the MLS fail? If its not in the account specifics then i would think either is correct. Maybe ask to have the instituation specify which they prefer and good luck on getting an answer!.

VAC of course! fewer letters; MTSO gets to pay less. - MT

That's what it's all about, isn't it?
