T2N0P(i)? Need help on radiation oncology dictation! - Serious

Posted: Oct 09, 2011

I am working on a radiation oncology dictation and the MD is stating that a breast tumor is measuring s/l T2N0P(i)...I am familiar with the first part of this cancer staging (the T-N part) but can't seem to find any reference to the second portion.  It really sounds like he is saying "P."  I see it referenced as a lowercase p but can't figure it out for sure.  He dictated the lowercase "i" being in parentheses too, but I can't find any reference for that either!

Any help would be most appreciated!  Thanks in advance...

I'd probably just type as he dictates, BUT - ohiocarole

I don't think it's the usual. I've done path for a lot of years.

This is a government site that should help in the future

http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/treatment/breast/healthprofessional/page3

Breakdown of the staging "code".... - anon

Sometimes they'll say pT2 pN1 pMx.. or cT1 cN0 cNx ... or even sT3 sNx sMx.. All that means is this..

T= tumor
N= node
M= metastases.
p= pathologic
c= clinical
s= staging
the "i" could indicate the location

Hope this helps.

the "i" part... - Serious

I wonder whether the "i" part could have pertained to the breast as this was a mucinous breast tumor...I ended up leaving it blank since no one seemed to be familiar with the way I had it and couldn't document it anywhere. Thanks for the help though!
