Transcend and SR - What to do

Posted: Oct 13, 2011

I've been offered a job with Transcend but it is part transcription and part SR.  I've never done SR and have no idea what to expect or what I will earn.  Anybody have any averages for SR lines per hour or work for Transcend and do SR and transcription?  I transcribe about 250-300 lines an hour, if that makes any difference.  Thanks for any words of wisdom.

Transcend SR - cpMT

SR is quite easy and quite frustrating at the same time. The report will popultate and you edit it (much like editing your kids essay or the like). Sometimes you can speed through it adding the "little" words and other times you want to tear your hair out because it could go faster if you just typed the stupid thing yourself. SR is a lower rate because they expect you to whiz through it (woudn;t that be nice). So it depends on the person dictating and the SR platform. SOme are better than others just as some people mumble versus annunciating everything. Wish I could help more but that is the basics and depends all on the person dictating and system used. Unfortunately, it is harder and harder to find straight transcription anymore as SR is taking over :(

It also depends on the honesty of the company - and the stability of the accounts. SM

When an MTSO wants to please a client or raise its own profits it pushes more reports through SR--for dictators SR can't do. Then we're supposed to wade through them for half rate. I'm sure they tell themselves they're saving our jobs, but here's the problem: the loss is shifted to us. We are never paid more for these.

So, Transcend is a large company with many accounts. You may do very well or not so well depending.

I work at Transcend and my job is about - 80 percent SR

When they announced they were switching our accounts over to SR, I was worried because I had never done it either. That was about a year and a half ago, and during the first couple of weeks, they had to talk me down off the ledge a few times.... But it really is not much different. It does involve a slightly different skill set, i.e. listening and reading, but the final report will appear no different than a straight-typed report.

It was indeed quite a bit slower for me at first, and it took me quite a lot of time to get my speed up to where I am making right around what I was making with straight typing--but with a lot less wear and tear on the hands, which is a good thing.

Now, having said that... the Transcend SR technology is a mixed bag. If you get onto a team where they aggressively continue to train the engine, and especially if you are hired for a region where the SR accounts are already "mature" (i.e. well-trained) it's not unusual to get very, very good drafts where you can crank the audio speed up to 150 percent of normal (or higher) and just whiz right on through. Mostly, though, in my experience (and I speak ONLY for myself and my accounts) I can get through a SR draft in about 1.25 times the length of the audio file, i.e. I'm listening and editing ALMOST as fast as they dictated it. (On really really good drafts with good audio, I can get through them in less time than the length of the audio file.)

But again, it took me quite a long time to reach this level of proficiency, and the use of a boatload of expander shortcuts to correct many (if not most of) the most common speech rec engine errors.

In fact, they are now offering extra training classes in the most popular expanders (Shorthand and Instant Text) and a lot of the emphasis is on boosting one's editing proficiency.

There's no real way to tell ahead of time what kind of accounts you might be put onto, and how well the SR works on them--but how to actually edit a draft is really the least of it.

Please feel free to respond to me via e-mail if there are any more specific questions I might be able to answer for you. Best of luck to you!

If you can find someone like the above poster - who will help you SM

in real time during your working hours (via Yahoo IM, etc.) that would make it a lot easier. Maybe someone on the same account would be willing to do that. If you do take the job, ask you TL to email the other MTs on the account who would be willing to help. What I have heard about Transcend is that everything depends on the region you are in. Some are excellent and some (possibly 1?) are not. I do think that Transcend is willing to help you become proficient, which is the opposite of what I read about other companies on this forum.

your skill set for reading and listening should also be in place when doing - straight transcription as well,sm

[ In Reply To ..]
they call it proofing as you type.

It will make a huge difference in your pay from typing 250-300 lines an hour as - your pay will be decreased, sm

[ In Reply To ..]
You would have to SR 500 lines or above an hour to just equal out.

the required line count for typing is only 150 lph in most cases for straight typing - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
so they would only expect you to do 300 lph for SR, which if your typing well above that won't give you the income you used to make. It's quite ironic, but the contracts I've seen haven't even raised the line requirement for SR, they simply state 1200 lines per day or some have 1500 lines per day that I have seen, and that's like 7.50 an hour if you're getting paid 4 cents a line. It's even worse for those only getting 3 cents a line. Unfortunately, my experience is that with SR, you're going to experience a good hour, a bad hour, a couple of good hours, a couple of bad hours, and then the average at the end of the day ends up not to be to your benefit for doing SR. After all, if I made $30 for one hour and then the next hour only made 7.50 that's gonna hit the pocketbook hard at the end of the day.

Ha! 150 per hour for straight typing and 300 for SR? - sm

You've got to be kidding. I get the worst garbage you'd every want to hear and I can't imagine even coming close to 300 for SR with the foreign doctors who can't speak clear English. Same goes for 150 with garbage speaking foreign-born doctors!

I totally agree. That example may be what they want, but highly doubt the - attainablity of that on some of this VR

VR At Transcend
Nov 18, 2009

Did VR develop Alzheimer's?  It has lost everything.  I am tired of no commas, periods, and everything else it reverted back to since its infancy.  It is really true that now you can transcribe faster than you can edit.  Does anyone even care?  Do you know how many times you have to stop in the middle of labs to put in punctuation?   This has been going on for over a month and I haven't noticed any big push to get it fixed.  Just another way to m ...

Transcend TLs ??
Feb 08, 2010

I am curious as to if the TLs are meeting their requirements.  They are expected to type 75-80% of their time and get paid by the line as well .  I am very suspicious that they are not typing VR all day, having their work sent to India, etc, and are getting the straight typing.  They get paid a flat fee per month for their administrative duties on top of that.  I wonder if they are experiencing no work and looking at a blank screen most of their time& ...

About Transcend
Mar 28, 2010

I have read dozens of posts on the board about Transcend, some good and a lot not so good.  However, I think there is an explanation for some MTs loving it there and others hating it so much. Transcend is a company made up of many other companies through mergers. The original Transcend who existed first, before acquiring other companies seems to be the problem.  On the other hand, for example MDI/Transcend, for the most part does not seem to fit that description. You have to remember ...

VR With Transcend?

I'm coming to the realization that unless I get faster with editing these VR reports, I am never going to be able to make the full-time production requirements at Transcend.  I'm really freaking out.  Is it really possible to do 300 lines per hour in VR?  How long does it take to get faster with it?    ...

Google Star Clip Itz Note Holder w/ Metal Rod & Alligator Clip to see exactly how much it cost Transcend per MT for this gift that bears so much thought and appreciation.  Do they really not realize how it affects their corporate image when their priority is placed on spending $600,000+ on a failed business venture versus the amount spent to "appreciate" the motor that makes their business run?  That's like spending more than a half million dollars to buy a garage to hous ...

Transcend/DTS
Jun 25, 2011

Did anyone else get the memo from Transcend (soon to take over from DTS) about the line rate change for the transitioning employees from DTS?  It was elegantly written, but basically it said that when the accounts are switched over the VR that the line rates will decrease but productivity will increase and no cut in pay is expected.  It is happening exactly how the posters on this board that have been through takeovers by Transcend said - decreased pay. I gave my notice already BT ...

Transcend - So Sad

I have been with Transcend for several years.  I loved Transcend in the beginning.  The people cared about me, actually made me feel worthy and valued (25+ years experience) and I felt as though I was part of a family.  I was one of the highest producers because I actually ENJOYED my job.  My quality score, even with high production was over 99% consistently.  Something I took MUCH pride in.  In the past year, all of that has changed drastically...so drastically.&nb ...
