Need an opinion from more computer-oriented friends please ... (sm) - anon

Posted: Jul 27, 2010

I am looking to purchase a second computer to use for work.  Can someone please tell me if this would be a really good and FAST computer to purchase?  It is a Dell.

Processor:  Intel Pentium D

Processor Speed (per core) 3.4 GHz, Dual Core

Memory (RAM):  4GB

Hard Drive Capacity:  500 GB

I get so confused with the processors and the hard drive capacity but I know that I definitely want the 4GB (have 2 now and it is toooooo slow).

Thanks so much in advance!!!!

if you get a good price on it, go for it. just stay away from that intel atom processor and of course stay away from the celeron. they are both "lacking".

I think you will be very happy with it. and you definitely don't want to go with less than 4gb ram.

The specs you mention appear pretty good. You might check the hard drive to see if it is an IDE or the newer SATA. The SATA is faster.
The biggest problem you have is the computer is a Dell. I would say the same thing if it were HP, or any other brand. This is because most of these brands design their components so that you have to go back to them, at premium prices, to upgrade, because only their components fit. If you have a friend who can build you a "clone" with those specs, youre probably better off.
First get the latest motherboard you can, then the fastest processor, then the most memory (RAM) then the largest and fastest hard drive.
One other suggestion. If you are using this for work, and occasional personal use, you might get a second physical hard drive, one which you use for work and the other holds your personal data. You can and should consider making one or both of these drives removable. This protects you from hackers. It's impossible to hack into a hard drive if it's removed from the computer. Plus, if you already have a computer you use for personal/pleasure, you can unplug its hard drive and insert your work one, and voila! You have a backup machine.
Also, don't save everything on your C drive. That's where your operating system is. If you ever have to reinstall it, you're going to have problems. You can build electronic walls to separate different "letter" drives on the same physical hard drive. I know that much of this may be "Geek" to you, and that's OK. My wife does transcription too and she has a mild case of cerebral palsy so she's limited to typing only with one hand. We just celebrated our 40th. I didn't have to wait for the TV series to be Touched by an Angel.
BTW, my email is dovestar at earthlink.net. Drop me a line if I can help.

We have almost 2/3s that set up and it works fine. 4g would be a great upgrade, and that really should be enough. I use autoCad 3d and my partner uses unlimited dictation and neither one of us have any problems. I agree with the first response that drive speed will make the biggest difference, SATA. It sounds like he knows a lot more than me about it. Remember, retail is for suckers, so make sure you offer less then they are asking. Good luck

Why Can't We Be Friends???
Nov 24, 2009

JUST A THOUGHT OR TWO!!  I have to say that I am tired of this being a battle between the seasoned versus the newbies! I love being a MT and have been successfully doing it from home (with a 2 year old and a 2 month old nonetheless) for the past 2+ years (I do not work an 8-5, but instead work around my kids and often am typing late at night, which is fine by me...and I make a pretty decent wage as a newer MT)!  But I would NOT be where I am without my great friend and "mentor" who ha ...

Farewell, My Friends
Jul 23, 2012

After 17 years, I resigned this morning. I will not be working anymore, and am very nervous at the prospect of living on my pension (from my former long-term employment) and social security, but after the MM support took remote control of my computer on Friday, could not fix the problem with DQS7, and totally messed up all the settings my new personal computer to the point I had to take it to my private IT support, for which I had to pay, I'd Almost had Enough. The icing on the cake was g ...

Probably Not Gonna Make Any Friends With This One, But...
Aug 26, 2011

I'm seeing a lot of these, “I hate my job” threads lately. To be fair, it's mostly aimed at Medquist, and other similar entities, but still.  Gotta keep your chins up guys. As a student, I find these kinds of threads very disheartening. In the very near future I'll be joining the ranks, and I won't lie; I would be tickled pink to be making minimum wage, or any wage whatsoever. A hundred dollars a week would be great for me. Obviously that's not ideal, b ...

last shift. I refuse to take part in the grid that starts tomorrow under the false guise of "patient safety." Nothing about this grid encourages safety, it only shouts survival. While I do care about the patients, I also care about my family and their ability to have a roof over their head. I understand the MLS have put up with this for quite a while, but in the case of QC, 2 weeks notice that we are ripping $400 or more weekly from your pay BUT we expect the same amount of work is ludicrou ...

Computer Age VS 6.1
Sep 10, 2010

I was just wondering how old some computers are that are having problems with 6.1 and if there are people with newer computers that handles it better.  Mine is a MQ computer that is 4 years old now and it bogs down quite a bit.  Everything is sluggish now.  I do have 1 GB of ram and 1.84 GHz, so 6.1 shouldn't take a toll on it as bad as it is.  I'm just wondering if I should ask the Q for an upgrade, if that is the problem.  Knowing the RAM and proces ...

Help MQ Computer

Need help! I don't use an MQ computer, since they don't want you to put anything personal on it, and most of my life, including banking, is on my computer.   My 4-year-old computer crashed and is in the shop for a couple days, and I decided maybe it's time to get a new one.  The problem is, DQS requires a 32-bit system, and so far all the new computers I've found are all Windows 7, which is 64 bits.   I also want to get a slimline, since it kills my ...
